All essential oils should be used safely in order to treat various conditions and promote inner peace and relaxation. However, all essential oils are not safe. In fact, some of them can negatively interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications. They can either dull or increase their power. This is why it is imperative to perform your due diligence, which may include speaking with a trained aromotherapist, before you begin using essential oils. The essential oils that are generally considered as safe are lavender and tea tree oil.

Lavender essential oil is created by extracting the oil from the lavender plant. It is used for both medicinal and enjoyment purposes. Studies have shown that lavender oil is effective in treating alopecia, stress, insomnia and even acts as an anti-bacterial agent. It can effectively be used with massage and acupuncture. Lavender is believed to be able to improve sleep, help individuals relax and lighten one’s mood by slowing down the nervous system. In Germany, lavender tea is given to people who suffer from the inability to sleep. Lavender oil is also believed to be able to help individuals that suffer from headaches, acne, fungal infections and eczema.

Tea tree oil is the other essential oil that is safe to use. You are likely to find lot of products that are infused with tea tree oil at your local beauty supply store or even Wal-mart.

There are some precautions that should be taken. Some studies have found that tea tree oil may affect hormones and may cause the breast tissue in boys to enlarge. Consequently, you may not want to allow your teen son to use it. Tea tree oil is generally safe for external use, but should never be taken internally.

However, tea tree oil does have some very good uses. It can be used to help in the healing of burns, cuts and skin infections. Other common uses include the treatment of acne, dandruff, eczema, boils, psoriasis, thrush, dandruff and athletes foot.

Tea tree oil and lavender oil are two of the most safe essential oils available. They are generally considered safe by the traditional and alternative health communities. If you have any questions about any intended uses for either of these essential oils, it is recommended that you speak with an aromatherapist who can provide you with the proper guidance.

Tea tree oil is extracted from a tree known as Melaleuca. The scientific name for this essential oil is Melaleuca Alternifolia. It is an antifungal agent mostly used for various types of skin disorders. It is also added as an ingredient to beauty products, the most popular of which is face wash.

Tea tree oil acne treatment is most suitable for the cure of moderate acne. It is applied as a topical or rub-on treatment. It is recommended to use tea tree oil only externally. Although it can prove to be effective for a lot of people out there, some people show sensitivity to it.

Tea tree oil acne treatment is used to get rid of many types of bacteria including staphyloccus, eschrichia coli and shigella sonnei. Staphyloccus is responsible for causing furuncles which are very similar to pimples as they are also painful nodules that appear on the surface of skin.

This essential oil is most commonly known as a treatment for various viral and bacterial infections. It is also added to mouthwashes and other products for the treatment of mouth ulcers and other conditions. Similarly, some people use it for the treatment of dandruff, lice, yeast infection, eczema, oil spots and nail infections.

It has been found that tea tree oil acne treatment does not guarantee complete acne cure. However, it does lessen acne breakouts and cure them temporarily as do many other topical acne treatments. It is recommended to use a good quality facial wash that contains tea tree oil as a main ingredient for proper cleansing of skin and to control pimples and prevent other skin disorders.

Some people are allergic to tea tree oil especially if they have sensitive skin. You should immediately discontinue its use if you experience redness of skin, irritation or rash. There are many other acne treatments that can be used instead of tea tree oil if it hasn’t proven to be useful for you.

Young boys who use shampoos and lotions containing essential oils like lavender and tea tree oils may end up with enlarged breasts.

This shocking side effect was reported by researchers at the University of Colorado and the environmental health branch of the US National Institutes of Health in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The strange condition known as gynecomastia was observed in three boys aged 4, 7, and 10 who developed enlarged breasts after using skin lotions, hair gel, shampoo, and soap containing the natural oils.

“These plant oils, sometimes called ‘essential oils,’ are added to many health-care products, usually for their scent. The oils are sometimes found in other household products or sold in purer forms. Tea tree oil is sometimes used in shampoos for head lice,” revealed Jeff Donn of the Associated Press.

“The three boys were brought to their doctors with overdeveloped breasts that looked like those of girls in early puberty. They were sore in one case. For each boy, doctors could tie the problem only to their use over several months of the natural-oil products,” Donn added.

It wasn’t clear how the oils led to this problem but researchers suspect they contained chemicals that affected the boys’ hormonal balance. They appear to mimic estrogen, the female hormone that promotes breast growth.

The oils are believed to have affected young girls in the same way, including a 17-month-old child whose parents used a lavender soap to wash her feeding bottle, according to Dr. Clifford Bloch, a hormone specialist in Greenwood Village, Colorado, who treated the patients.

“Be cautious. I would not give these products to my children,” Bloch said.

“On product labels, the oils sometimes are listed by their scientific names: Lavandula angustifolia (lavender oil) and Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil). Such products do not require government approval to be sold unless they make specific health claims,” Donn revealed.

None of the researchers, however, called for a ban of these products, considering that the problem is rare and clears up when they are no longer used. However, they did advise parents to consider the risks of using such products.

As we wait for more developments in this area, it’s best to use other products in the meantime, especially since the long term effects of the above essentials oils remain unknown. For those considering breast augmentation, play safe by using the Clevastin Natural Breast Enlargement System. This product contains natural plant estrogens that will tighten and improve your breasts. Check out http://www.clevastin.com for more information.

We have all heard of the famous British explorer captain Cook. In 1770 captain Cook landed Botany Bay near the site that eventually would become known as Sydney, Australia. During this period of discovery he came across the “Healing ground” area which was named by the aborigines, it was an area filled with trees. Cook observed the aborigines as they applied crushed leaves, gathered from these trees, to open wounds. They also brewed tea from those same leaves which Cook found spicy and refreshing and it was he who gave the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree its common name “The tea tree”.

Captain Cook and his crew would later on take samples of the tea tree back to England for further study but nothing ever became of those studies and as a result the medical properties of the Melaleuca Alternifolia remained undiscovered to those outside of Australia.

Dr Dennis Considen, who was a surgeon recognized the medical properties of the tea tree but due to lack of training and equipment the powerful potential of the oil remained dormant for the next 150 years. In 1923 Dr.A. Penfold, an Australian chemist studied the tea tree oil in depth after distilling it and found that it had significant antiseptic as well as bactericidal properties. He presented his findings in 1925 to the Royal Society of new South Wales and England, you can find the first medical reference to the qualities of tea tree oil in the medical journal of Australia 1930.

When World War 2 broke out the melaleuca oil was an essential part of every Australian first aid kit as they fully recognized the many medical qualities that lie within it.

Later on, in 1960 further studies were conducted in an attempt to rediscover and recertify the effects of the tea tree oil and so it begun, the tea tree and its oil became the hit of the century and as a result the Australian government had to set some standards for development of acceptable quality oil which included a concentration of at least 35% terpinen 4-ol & no more than 10 % cineole.

Eventually the old standards would change slightly to accommodate room for further proliferation and in the current day, melaleuca oil is recognized & sold world wide. It has undergone extensive research and has proven its multiple medical benefits, a good quality oil today would have at least 35% terpinen 4-ol & no more than 10% cineole which is the 1967 standard.

Melaleuca has once more been re-recognized as an extremely effective cure for a variety of medical conditions. Who would have ever thought that a tree would have such a long and complex history?

So, the answer is yes, health, wellness & a tea tree do connect. Infact, they have connected so well that some companies have used melaleuca oil in many of their products to establish a successful health line.

Many have been blessed to learn and gain from the multiple benefits of the tea tree and for me, it was a discovery beyond all medical discoveries.

Tea tree oil acne and boils treatment is becomming more and more common and worth exploring.

A boil is an inflamed area, usually based in a hair follicle, and can be caused by a physical condition such as acne, or severe dermatitis and can also result from low immunity, irritations, an illness, stress, food allergy, poor diet, shaving, plucking hairs or poor hygiene. A boil usually starts as a tender area, becoming hard and swelling, and eventually softening and forming a head. The head is filled with bacteria and the white blood cells fighting the infection (pus). Staphylococcus is the bacteria that is usually found in the pus of a boil.

The bacteria involved are those usually present on healthy skin, so the boil is an indication of low resistance to infection. It is advised not to lance the boil, because bacteria can spread to nearby skin and create new boils. Apply hot packs for up to 20 minutes at a time, throughout the day, as the heat draws more white blood cells, thereby helping to fight the infection. Do not cover with a bandaid. Wash with tea tree oil soap and apply antiseptic cream containing tea tree oil. A drop or two of tea tree oil may also be applied directly to the boil. Dab it on with a piece of clean cotton, do not rub or otherwise irritate the boil.

Procedure to be followed periodically throughout the day:

Dab some tea tree oil onto the boil with a piece of cotton to help bring it to a head, then cover with a piece of gauze. Cover the gauze with a damp washcloth, followed by a dry towel and then apply a heating pad. Leave on a low temperature for about 15 minutes. Change your dressing and reapply the tea tree oil. The oil helps bring the boil to a head while the warm compress helps pull the infection out of the skin; the tea tree oil then acts as an antiseptic and antibiotic on the bacteria in the pus. Be sure to throw away the gauze each time, and wash your hands with tea tree oil soap each time you handle the gauze or touch the boil.

Sometimes a boil’s bacteria can spread to a lymph node that is nearby. If there is a boil on the neck, check the lymph glands for swelling and tenderness. You should visit a doctor if this occurs, also if there is fever or lethargy. It’s important to learn to listen to your body and recognize when tea tree oil acne and boils treatment will be enough, and when you need the help of a doctor.

Want a easy to take along treatment for wasp stings, bee stings, and other insect bites? Try this. Next time you go out for a hike, or even for a drive, make sure your first aid kit includes a bottle of tea tree oil. This little wonder from down under can take some of the bite out of summer insect woes.

Wasps are truly one of God’s wonders. These little creatures are incredible! They produce, like ants and bees, a substance called formic acid injecting it into you or I when the wasp or bee feels threatened or has it’s territory invaded.

Sometimes there are other substances that react with our immune system and cause a allergic reaction which in some cases can be life threatening. This reaction can come on violently and quickly. An allergic person should carry their wasp and bee stings kit with them. It is important to note, that some individuals who have never had a reaction before have had sudden symptoms appear. Sometimes these reactions occur swiftly, ten to thirty minutes or less!. Things like breathing difficulties, rapid pulse, intense sweating, swelling of the throat or eyes, and maybe a feeling of dizziness. If any of these or other symptoms appear, get medical attention immediately!

All that in mind, for most of us, getting stung is just a real pain. So, how can you best use tea tree oil as a treatment for wasp stings? In our house, and in our first aid kits in both the house and car, we keep a bottle of tea tree oil, benedryl, and vitamin C. For us, when we get wasp and bee stings, we take the age and weight appropriate dose of benedryl, 1000mg of vitamin C, and apply tea tree oil to the sting 3 or 4 times an hour until the pain subsides.

Mosquito bites?

Again, make sure you are getting the best tea tree oil available. Although your kids may want the latest mosquito bite ringtone, most of us at some point in the year, especially in warmer moist areas, are thinking of preventing bites. I haven’t met anyone yet who hasn’t had an allergic reaction to mosquito bites, and I haven’t found anyone yet who can take away the itch completely.

I have found though, that I can make my itchy bites feel better with just a few drops of tea tree oil 3 or 4 times every hour. Yep, the tea tree oil soothes the bite and relieves some of the itching. Leaving out the benadryl, unless you have a severe reaction to the mosquito bite, follow the same recommendations as above, and along with the tea tree oil you should feel relief quickly

It may be the antibacterial properties are effective, at least topically, should you squash the little bugger and you want to disinfect the blood and any bacteria that the mosquito is carrying. Some of the medical research suggests that tea tree oil has antibiotic properties when applied topically, so this seems like a real possibility.

A good balm with tea tree oil, or some tea tree oil on the affected area is sure to help. One company that uses tea tree oil in it’s products has an incredible sun-block lotion that some people report helps keep the mosquitoes away. Others have found Avon’s skin-so-soft to be effective.

Anytime you’re outside where it’s moist and warm, the mosquitoes seem to find people like me. I think I’m bait to keep everyone else safe. Ever since I’ve been taking a good multi-vitamin (we get these from the same place as we get our tea tree oil) I’ve had fewer bites, both from mosquitoes and from fleas that come off the dogs outside.

You can find out more on the many uses of tea tree oil on the website http://www.tea-tree-info.com Also you can contact me at beane@tea-tree-info.com for good sources of tea tree oil products for home, health, and beauty.

The skin is the largest organ of the body, it covers an area of 21 square feet (two square meters) and weighs around eleven pounds (five kilograms) in an average adult. No other organ is so exposed to infection, pollution, and injury or can be inspected so readily. It has a very complex layered structure that contains billions of skin cells, sensory cells, nerve endings, pores, sweat glands, oil glands, fibres, blood vessels, and hair roots. Bacteria, yeasts and fungi, that live.

Tea Tree Oil (a key ingredient in Zap It!) has significant antiseptic properties to fight against the majority of skin infections. It can also impede rashes caused by parasites and insects. It stops the itching and calms the inflammation normally associated with eczema, psoriasis and topical skin flares. But, the very best thing about tea tree oil is that if you have an unidentified area of pimples, patch testing with diluted tea tree or a good quality tea tree cream on a small area will not hurt it and it may well go on to cure it.

Acne — Zap It! Tea Tree Oil

Acne can strike at any age, it can be caused by stress, a hormone imbalance, pollutants, a poor cleansing routine or hereditary. Zap-it!®, with both tea tree oil and Salicylic acid (which is naturally found in several plants, such as willow, birch and wintergreen) is a safe treatment for those skin conditions that need the dead scaly skin removed so that the natural ingredients can penetrate to work more effectively.

Melaleuca oil is specifically mentioned for having antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial and acaricidal actions against skin infections such as acne, herpes and scabies in the following abstract.

-Adverse and beneficial effects of plant extracts on skin and skin disorders. Adverse Drug React Toxicol Rev. 2001 Jun;20(2):89-103.

This was the first peer-reviewed paper about the effects of melaleuca oil on acne. It concludes that the treatment of acne with melaleuca oil results in fewer side effects than a treatment of benzoyl peroxide.

-A comparative study of tea-tree oil versus benzoylperoxide in the treatment of acne. Med J Aust. 1990 Oct 15;153(8):455-8.

Salicylic acid, which is the main active ingredient in Zap-it!®, is a safe treatment for skin conditions that need the dead scaly skin removed so that the natural ingredients, such as melaleuca oil, can penetrate to work more effectively. It is naturally found in several plants, such as willow, birch trees and wintergreen leaves. Salicylic acid applied on pads reduced the number of acne lesions and was well tolerated.

-Treatment of acne vulgaris with salicylic acid pads. Clin Ther. 1992 Mar-Apr;14(2):247-53.

In this comparison study, salicylic acid was superior to benzoyl peroxide for the treatment of acne. Comparison of a salicylic acid cleanser and a benzoyl peroxide wash in the treatment of acne vulgaris. Clin Ther.1989 Mar-Apr;11(2):264-7.

-Zap It!Melaleuca oil for treatment of skin conditions caused by other organisms.

That is the beauty of such a broad-spectrum antiseptic substance, it does not matter what sort of organism caused the skin infection and associated irritation, melaleuca oil helps to alleviate it:

The way that melaleuca oil can easily penetrate the skin suggests it may be suitable for use in the treatment of fungal mucosal and cutaneous infections.

-In vitro activity of tea tree oil against Candida albicans mycelial conversion and other pathogenic fungi. J Chemother. 2001 Aug;13(4):377-83.

Unlike the normal antibacterial topical medicines, diluted melaleuca oil can maintain the beneficial skin bacteria while getting rid of the nastier strains that cause the problems.

Susceptibility of transient and commensal skin flora to the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil). Am J Infect Control. 1996 Jun;24(3):186-9. And don’t forget the viral skin infections. A 6% tea tree dilution in gel form shows significant results against reoccurring herpes labialis (Cold sores).

Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil gel (6%) for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (2001) 48, 450-451

More serious skin infections: Staphylococcus aureus is a strain of bacteria that lives naturally on the skin. When an over-growth occurs it can cause minor infections, such as pus-filled spots and boils, etc. When it becomes resistant to the strongest antibiotics that we have, it becomes known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or golden-staph. This can also live on the skin without causing any problem to the host. But, when it is transferred to another less-healthy individual or it infects a wound, it can become life threatening. MRSA/Golden staph, claims tens of thousands of lives every year. Melaleuca oil has been shown to inhibit and even destroy it, both in vitro and in vivo.

-Staphylococcus aureus and wounds: A review of tea tree oil as a promising antimicrobial agent. Am J Infect Control. 2004 Nov;32(7):402-8.

This controlled trial in a hospital found that tea tree preparations used in the

decolonization of MRSA were effective, safe and well tolerated.

Tea tree oil is an essential oil which is yellow- or green-tinged with a fresh amphoraceous smell. It is produced by steam distillation of the leaves of the plant – Melaleuca alternifolia, more commonly known as the Australian tea tree. As the name suggests, the trees are native to Australia and have been used for thousands of years by the aboriginals in Australia for healing wounds, cuts, abrasions, burns and infections by applying the crushed leaves to the affected areas.

These days the tea tree oil is being used as an antiseptic to treat burns, cuts, insect bites etc. It has anti-inflammatory properties and hence can be used as a topical application to give relief in conditions like arthritis, eczema, bursitis and gout.It can also give relief from pain because of its analgesic property. The oil is also anti-fungal. In some hospitals in Australia, it has been used before surgery to boost the affected immune system and in a London hospital, a study has been done and it was shown that the Tea Tree Oil can be an alternative to Vancomysin in countering the super bug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Tea tree oil when inhaled makes breathing easier by acting as a decongestant. It can alleviate symptoms of sore throat and decrease the symptoms of cold and flu.

SKIN

The Tea tree oil has many uses for the skin. Its proven antifungal properties can be used to treat candidacies, ringworm, athlete’s foot and thrush. It can also be used to treat dandruff because it fights Malassezia furfur, which is most common cause for this affliction. Fungal nail infections can be cured by application of a formulation containing tea tree oil twice daily and relief can be typically seen in 3-4 months.

As a strong anti-viral agent, Tea Tree is effective in fighting many common
infectious diseases such as cold, shingles, measles, flu and chicken pox.

Tea tree oil is effective in treating boils, insect bites, minor wounds, soothe inflammation caused by sunburn poison ivy and bee stings.

The essential oil is also known to prevent foul body odor and soothe burning feet. It reduces scarring caused by hypertrophy. When massaged, tea tree oil may alleviate the discomfort of joint injuries and sore muscles.

It can also be used in the treatment of acne. When topically applied, a 5% solution of tea tree oil has been proved as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide though it had a slower onset of action.

The oil can be used effectively for treating nappy/Diaper rash in babies which is cause.

Research has also shown that tea tree oil may have topical anti-viral property, with the Herpes virus, chicken pox, cold sores, warts, and shingles blisters, etc.

A word of caution; though tea tree oil is safe to use, it should not be used undiluted as in case of all essential oils. Undiluted Tea Tree Oil can cause irritation, itchiness, and redness on sensitive skin. Therefore, in case of people with sensitive skin, it is prudent to dilute the tea tree oil in another base oil like olive oil or even sunflower oil.
