Tea tree oil acne and boils treatment is becomming more and more common and worth exploring.

A boil is an inflamed area, usually based in a hair follicle, and can be caused by a physical condition such as acne, or severe dermatitis and can also result from low immunity, irritations, an illness, stress, food allergy, poor diet, shaving, plucking hairs or poor hygiene. A boil usually starts as a tender area, becoming hard and swelling, and eventually softening and forming a head. The head is filled with bacteria and the white blood cells fighting the infection (pus). Staphylococcus is the bacteria that is usually found in the pus of a boil.

The bacteria involved are those usually present on healthy skin, so the boil is an indication of low resistance to infection. It is advised not to lance the boil, because bacteria can spread to nearby skin and create new boils. Apply hot packs for up to 20 minutes at a time, throughout the day, as the heat draws more white blood cells, thereby helping to fight the infection. Do not cover with a bandaid. Wash with tea tree oil soap and apply antiseptic cream containing tea tree oil. A drop or two of tea tree oil may also be applied directly to the boil. Dab it on with a piece of clean cotton, do not rub or otherwise irritate the boil.

Procedure to be followed periodically throughout the day:

Dab some tea tree oil onto the boil with a piece of cotton to help bring it to a head, then cover with a piece of gauze. Cover the gauze with a damp washcloth, followed by a dry towel and then apply a heating pad. Leave on a low temperature for about 15 minutes. Change your dressing and reapply the tea tree oil. The oil helps bring the boil to a head while the warm compress helps pull the infection out of the skin; the tea tree oil then acts as an antiseptic and antibiotic on the bacteria in the pus. Be sure to throw away the gauze each time, and wash your hands with tea tree oil soap each time you handle the gauze or touch the boil.

Sometimes a boil’s bacteria can spread to a lymph node that is nearby. If there is a boil on the neck, check the lymph glands for swelling and tenderness. You should visit a doctor if this occurs, also if there is fever or lethargy. It’s important to learn to listen to your body and recognize when tea tree oil acne and boils treatment will be enough, and when you need the help of a doctor.

One of the most uses of tea tree essential oil is in the treatment of skin disorders. Acne is a very common disease involving the sebaceous glands. It affects about 90% of men and women at some point during their lives.

In 1990, one of Australia’s leading dermatologists carried out an acne study at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney comparing 5% benzoyl peroxide and 5% tea tree essential oil. Both agents performed equally as well in reducing the acne, with tea tree oil having a slightly slower effect. However, comparing the two agents, tea tree oil had significantly less side effects, suggesting more frequent application and higher concentration is possible.

People with acne tend to excrete more sebaceous lipids onto the surface of the skin than unaffected people. In combination with normally shed dead skin cells, this may lead to clogging of the pores. Bacterial (propionibacterium acnes) infection is another component of acne. A clogged hair follicle becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. This can result in redness and puss-filled bumps (the dreaded zit).

Topical treatment is difficult because the medicine needs to penetrate the skin in sufficient concentration, and be strong enough not to be inactivated by the presence of blood and puss. But it also has to be gentle enough to not cause irritation. Tea tree essential oil dissolves pus and kills bacteria, leaving the area clean and tissue undamaged.

Other interesting uses of tree tea oil:

- The tea tree has been used by the Bundjalung Aborigines in Australia for centuries to heal wounds, burns, and infections.

- The plant has antiseptic properties, as well as being a germicide, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, immune-boosting, cleanser/disinfectant. Its oil is unusual in that it is effective against all three types of infectious organisms: bacteria, viruses and fungi.

- When applied to cuts, burns or bruises, it can lessen pain, speed healing and reduce inflammation.

- A few drops can be added to bath water to soothe tight muscles, and the warm steam can help to clear congestion from lungs and sinuses.

- Tea tree essential oil is widely used in massage by aromatherapists to boost the immune system.

- A one percent solution in laundry water kills dust mites which is a common cause of asthma in many people.

Tea tree is tolerated by most when applied directly without the use of a dilutant. Some individuals may be sensitive to tea tree, so always do a patch test before using anything new on your body.

Note: tea tree essential oil can be dangerous if swallowed. As little as 5 ml can be toxic to a small child, so it’s important to keep it out of reach of children.

If you haven’t heard of Tea Tree Oil, you are missing out. It has so many benefits that it is a must have for your home medicine chest.

What is Tea Tree Oil? Basically, it is an oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia.

Historically, the leaves were used as a substitute for tea, which is how tea tree oil got its name. The part used medicinally is the oil from the leaves.

The Tea Tree has a long history of traditional use. Australian aboriginals used Tea Tree leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, and infections by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area. The oils work as an antiseptic and antifungal due to terpenoids found naturally within the oil.

The first to recognize the unique qualities of the essential oil was a government chemist from Sydney, A. R. Penfold. In 1925 he announced the results of laboratory experiments that showed the oil was twelve times stronger than phenol (carbolic acid) which was then the universal standard for antiseptic substances. This led to further research and to the increasing use of the oil in medicine, dentistry and as a home remedy.

In 1930 a report in the Medical Journal of Australia’ commented on its non- toxicity and lack of irritancy. The report noted enthusiastically that tea-tree oil dissolved pus and left the surfaces of infected wounds clean so that its germicidal action became more effective and without any apparent damage to the tissues. ‘Dirty wounds, such as are frequently seen as the result of street accidents, may be washed or syringed out with a 10% watery lotion; the solvent properties will loosen and bring away the dirt which is usually ground in … healing will readily take place.’

In 1936 the same journal reported a very bad case of diabetic gangrene successfully treated with tea-tree oil. In 1937 it was pointed out that one of the outstanding features of the oil is that the presence of blood, pus or other organic matter actually increases the oil’s antiseptic powers by some 10 to 12 per cent.

During the Second World War tea-tree oil was issued in first aid kits to army and navy units in the tropical regions. At one point demand so outstripped supply that synthetic antiseptics had to be substituted. This, coupled with the fervent post-war interest in antibiotic drugs, led to a decline of interest in tea-tree, which persisted right up to the 1970s.

So what are the complete benefits of Tea Tree Oil? Most notoriously, people have used it for the following conditions:

    * Acne

    * Athlete’s foot

    * Dandruff

    * Vaginitis

    * Thrush

    * Periodontal disease

    * As an antiseptic

    * Boils

    * Lice

    * Eczema

    * Psoriasis

    * Yeast infection

There is dispute over whether Tea Tree Oil can be taken internally. Most packaging recommends against it, others claim in reasonable amounts it has various benefits. But taking it internally should only be by the advice of a professional.

So now you have heard of Tea Tree Oil. What are you waiting for, find some for your medicine chest.

We have all heard of the famous British explorer captain Cook. In 1770 captain Cook landed Botany Bay near the site that eventually would become known as Sydney, Australia. During this period of discovery he came across the “Healing ground” area which was named by the aborigines, it was an area filled with trees. Cook observed the aborigines as they applied crushed leaves, gathered from these trees, to open wounds. They also brewed tea from those same leaves which Cook found spicy and refreshing and it was he who gave the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree its common name “The tea tree”.

Captain Cook and his crew would later on take samples of the tea tree back to England for further study but nothing ever became of those studies and as a result the medical properties of the Melaleuca Alternifolia remained undiscovered to those outside of Australia.

Dr Dennis Considen, who was a surgeon recognized the medical properties of the tea tree but due to lack of training and equipment the powerful potential of the oil remained dormant for the next 150 years. In 1923 Dr.A. Penfold, an Australian chemist studied the tea tree oil in depth after distilling it and found that it had significant antiseptic as well as bactericidal properties. He presented his findings in 1925 to the Royal Society of new South Wales and England, you can find the first medical reference to the qualities of tea tree oil in the medical journal of Australia 1930.

When World War 2 broke out the melaleuca oil was an essential part of every Australian first aid kit as they fully recognized the many medical qualities that lie within it.

Later on, in 1960 further studies were conducted in an attempt to rediscover and recertify the effects of the tea tree oil and so it begun, the tea tree and its oil became the hit of the century and as a result the Australian government had to set some standards for development of acceptable quality oil which included a concentration of at least 35% terpinen 4-ol & no more than 10 % cineole.

Eventually the old standards would change slightly to accommodate room for further proliferation and in the current day, melaleuca oil is recognized & sold world wide. It has undergone extensive research and has proven its multiple medical benefits, a good quality oil today would have at least 35% terpinen 4-ol & no more than 10% cineole which is the 1967 standard.

Melaleuca has once more been re-recognized as an extremely effective cure for a variety of medical conditions. Who would have ever thought that a tree would have such a long and complex history?

So, the answer is yes, health, wellness & a tea tree do connect. Infact, they have connected so well that some companies have used melaleuca oil in many of their products to establish a successful health line.

Many have been blessed to learn and gain from the multiple benefits of the tea tree and for me, it was a discovery beyond all medical discoveries.

The benefits of tea tree oil for your skin

Tea tree oil is an essential oil which is yellow- or green-tinged with a fresh amphoraceous smell. It is produced by steam distillation of the leaves of the plant – Melaleuca alternifolia, more commonly known as the Australian tea tree. As the name suggests, the trees are native to Australia and have been used for thousands of years by the aboriginals in Australia for healing wounds, cuts, abrasions, burns and infections by applying the crushed leaves to the affected areas.

These days the tea tree oil is being used as an antiseptic to treat burns, cuts, insect bites etc. It has anti-inflammatory properties and hence can be used as a topical application to give relief in conditions like arthritis, eczema, bursitis and gout.It can also give relief from pain because of its analgesic property. The oil is also anti-fungal. In some hospitals in Australia, it has been used before surgery to boost the affected immune system and in a London hospital, a study has been done and it was shown that the Tea Tree Oil can be an alternative to Vancomysin in countering the super bug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Tea tree oil when inhaled makes breathing easier by acting as a decongestant. It can alleviate symptoms of sore throat and decrease the symptoms of cold and flu.

SKIN
The Tea tree oil has many uses for the skin. Its proven antifungal properties can be used to treat candidacies, ringworm, athlete’s foot and thrush. It can also be used to treat dandruff because it fights Malassezia furfur, which is most common cause for this affliction. Fungal nail infections can be cured by application of a formulation containing tea tree oil twice daily and relief can be typically seen in 3-4 months.

As a strong anti-viral agent, Tea Tree is effective in fighting many common infectious diseases such as cold, shingles, measles, flu and chicken pox.

Tea tree oil is effective in treating boils, insect bites, minor wounds, soothe inflammation caused by sunburn poison ivy and bee stings.

The essential oil is also known to prevent foul body odor and soothe burning feet. It reduces scarring caused by hypertrophy. When massaged, tea tree oil may alleviate the discomfort of joint injuries and sore muscles.
It can also be used in the treatment of acne. When topically applied, a 5% solution of tea tree oil has been proved as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide though it had a slower onset of action.

The oil can be used effectively for treating nappy/Diaper rash in babies which is cause.

Research has also shown that tea tree oil may have topical anti-viral property, with the Herpes virus, chicken pox, cold sores, warts, and shingles blisters, etc.

A word of caution; though tea tree oil is safe to use, it should not be used undiluted as in case of all essential oils. Undiluted Tea Tree Oil can cause irritation, itchiness, and redness on sensitive skin. Therefore, in case of people with sensitive skin, it is prudent to dilute the tea tree oil in another base oil like olive oil or even sunflower oil.
