Be sure to throw away the gauze each time, and wash your hands with tea tree oil soap each time you handle the gauze or touch the boil.

Sometimes a boil’s bacteria can spread to a lymph node that is nearby. If there is a boil on the neck, check the lymph glands for swelling and tenderness. Tea tree leaves were earlier used as a substitute for tea, which is how tree oil got its name.  The Tea Tree oil is obtained from steam distillation of the leaves of the tree Melaleuca alternifolia. Tea tree oil is very effective in treatment of moderate acne. A random trial was done to prove this by the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Department of Dermatology on 124 people. This trail compared the effectiveness and tolerance of 5% tea tree oil and 5% benzoyl peroxide. The results showed that there was significant reduction using tea tree oil, albeit with slower onset of action.  

Even though tea tree oil took more time in showing results, there were fewer side effects like burning, itching, dryness and stinging that benezoyl peroxide group showed.

Another study in 2007 on 60 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris also gave notably better results than placebo.

Using Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Unadulterated tea tree oil should not be applied to acne lesion as it causes burning, itching, dryness, redness, skin irritation and even blistering. The concentration that is advised is 5% tea tree oil gel which can be applied to effected areas.

To make 5% tea tree oil solution mix 5 parts of tea tree oil to 95 parts of water (5cc of 100% tea tree oil to 95cc of water). 

 Brenda Harper, Calfornian aesthetician uses it on a regular basis with clients who experience acne, with “wonderful results,”. She recommends application of Glycolic acid after dabbing tea tree oil on the affected areas and waiting for 15 minutes.

While tea tree oil is safe, as long as not used internally. Data on oral use of tea tree oil is very little and reports of side effects of oral ingestion.

Home Treatments for Head Lice

This shocking side effect was reported by researchers at the University of Colorado and the environmental health branch of the US National Institutes of Health in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The strange condition known as gynecomastia was observed in three boys aged 4, 7, and 10 who developed enlarged breasts after using skin lotions, hair gel, shampoo, and soap containing the natural oils.

“These plant oils, sometimes called ‘essential oils,’ are added to many health-care products, usually for their scent. The oils are sometimes found in other household products or sold in purer forms. Tea tree oil is sometimes used in shampoos for head lice,” revealed Jeff Donn of the Associated Press.

“The three boys were brought to their doctors with overdeveloped breasts that looked like those of girls in early puberty. They were sore in one case. For each boy, doctors could tie the problem only to their use over several months of the natural-oil products,” Donn added.

It wasn’t clear how the oils led to this problem but researchers suspect they contained chemicals that affected the boys’ hormonal balance. They appear to mimic estrogen, the female hormone that promotes breast growth.

The oils are believed to have affected young girls in the same way, including a 17-month-old child whose parents used a lavender soap to wash her feeding bottle, according to Dr. Clifford Bloch, a hormone specialist in Greenwood Village, Colorado, who treated the patients.

“Be cautious. I would not give these products to my children,” Bloch said.

“On product labels, the oils sometimes are listed by their scientific names: Lavandula angustifolia (lavender oil) and Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil). Such products do not require government approval to be sold unless they make specific health claims,” Donn revealed.

None of the researchers, however, called for a ban of these products, considering that the problem is rare and clears up when they are no longer used. However, they did advise parents to consider the risks of using such products.

As we wait for more developments in this area, it’s best to use other products in the meantime, especially since the long term effects of the above essentials oils remain unknown. Captain Cook and his crew would later on take samples of the tea tree back to England for further study but nothing ever became of those studies and as a result the medical properties of the Melaleuca Alternifolia remained undiscovered to those outside of Australia.

Dr Dennis Considen, who was a surgeon recognized the medical properties of the tea tree but due to lack of training and equipment the powerful potential of the oil remained dormant for the next 150 years. Eventually the old standards would change slightly to accommodate room for further proliferation and in the current day, melaleuca oil is recognized & sold world wide. It has undergone extensive research and has proven its multiple medical benefits, a good quality oil today would have at least 35% terpinen 4-ol & no more than 10% cineole which is the 1967 standard.

Melaleuca has once more been re-recognized as an extremely effective cure for a variety of medical conditions. Who would have ever thought that a tree would have such a long and complex history?
