If you haven’t heard of Tea Tree Oil, you are missing out. It has so many benefits that it is a must have for your home medicine chest.

What is Tea Tree Oil? Basically, it is an oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia.

Historically, the leaves were used as a substitute for tea, which is how tea tree oil got its name. The part used medicinally is the oil from the leaves.

The Tea Tree has a long history of traditional use. Australian aboriginals used Tea Tree leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, and infections by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area. The oils work as an antiseptic and antifungal due to terpenoids found naturally within the oil.

The first to recognize the unique qualities of the essential oil was a government chemist from Sydney, A. R. Penfold. In 1925 he announced the results of laboratory experiments that showed the oil was twelve times stronger than phenol (carbolic acid) which was then the universal standard for antiseptic substances. This led to further research and to the increasing use of the oil in medicine, dentistry and as a home remedy.

In 1930 a report in the Medical Journal of Australia’ commented on its non- toxicity and lack of irritancy. The report noted enthusiastically that tea-tree oil dissolved pus and left the surfaces of infected wounds clean so that its germicidal action became more effective and without any apparent damage to the tissues. ‘Dirty wounds, such as are frequently seen as the result of street accidents, may be washed or syringed out with a 10% watery lotion; the solvent properties will loosen and bring away the dirt which is usually ground in … healing will readily take place.’

In 1936 the same journal reported a very bad case of diabetic gangrene successfully treated with tea-tree oil. In 1937 it was pointed out that one of the outstanding features of the oil is that the presence of blood, pus or other organic matter actually increases the oil’s antiseptic powers by some 10 to 12 per cent.

During the Second World War tea-tree oil was issued in first aid kits to army and navy units in the tropical regions. At one point demand so outstripped supply that synthetic antiseptics had to be substituted. This, coupled with the fervent post-war interest in antibiotic drugs, led to a decline of interest in tea-tree, which persisted right up to the 1970s.

So what are the complete benefits of Tea Tree Oil? Most notoriously, people have used it for the following conditions:

    * Acne

    * Athlete’s foot

    * Dandruff

    * Vaginitis

    * Thrush

    * Periodontal disease

    * As an antiseptic

    * Boils

    * Lice

    * Eczema

    * Psoriasis

    * Yeast infection

There is dispute over whether Tea Tree Oil can be taken internally. Most packaging recommends against it, others claim in reasonable amounts it has various benefits. But taking it internally should only be by the advice of a professional.

So now you have heard of Tea Tree Oil. What are you waiting for, find some for your medicine chest.

Tea tree oil is an herb with many functions and has been used by Australian Aboriginal people for centuries. They used the leaves of the tree as an antifungal and antiseptic by crushing the leaves and making a pack.

It was considered essential by the Australian government for the first aid kit of armed forces during the Second World War. Once the war was over, there was an increased use of antibiotics which led to a decrease in the use tea tree oil’s all over except in Australia. In 1960, it regained its popularity everywhere. Today, Melaleuca alternifolia is grown in many places including California.

The properties of the tea tree oil are present in its leaves. The oil is manufactured by the process of steam – distillation of the leaves. The main active substances in the oil are 1,8-cineole, terpinen-4-ol, p-cymene, gamma-terpinene and other turpenes. The aroma of the oil is that of a pleasant disinfectant.

Uses include:
• Antiseptic : It can be used to treat conditions like insect bites, burns, cuts, acne, bruises, infected wounds, boils, scabies, chillblains, lice, diaper rash, hives, prickly heat, and sunburn as it is an excellent natural antiseptic.

• Anti inflammatory : It has anti inflammatory properties and can be applied topically for sprains, bunions, arthritis, bursitis, gout, eczema, hemorrhoids and also carpal tunnel syndrome.

• Analgesic : It can be used for relief from pain

• Anti Fungal : It also has Anti Fungal function which can take care of athlete’s foot, albicans, thrush, jock itch, ringworm, and onychomycosis (Infection of the nails).

• Preventive: Surgeons in hospitals in Australia treat patients with it before surgery to help those with chronic illnesses like chronic fatigue syndrome and give a boost to the suppressed immune system.

• Household cleaning: It is natural solvent which makes it an excellent biodegradable cleaning agent. It can be used as a deodorizer, for washing cotton diapers; or disinfectant and to treat houseplants for molds, parasitic infections and fungus.

Toothpaste and tea tree oil
The disinfectant and antiseptic properties of it makes it ideal for use in products for oral hygiene. Mouth washes and toothpastes containing tea tree oil have been proved to be effective against many oral problems. Some of these are, gum disease, halitosis (bad breath), and cancer sores.

Brushing your teeth with toothpaste which has tea tree oil as an ingredient or adding some to your usual toothpaste is recommended. This will help both teeth and gums. You can even add a couple of drops of the oil to the water to be used for gargling. A few drops of the tea tree oil applied on the sore area would bring down the inflammation.

The use of Tea tree oil has also been done to kill oral bacteria prior to dental surgery and to decrease the irritation in the mouth caused due to dental procedures. In patients who have oral candidiasis, which is a fungal infection of the throat and mouth, a mouth rinse containing tea tree oil may prove effective in reducing symptoms.

Tea Tree Oil is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation and extraction of the leaves from the Melaleuca tree in Australia. Tea Tree Oil is a clear essential oil with a fresh camphoraceous odor. Australian aboriginals used tea leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, sore throats, skin ailments and infection by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area.

Tea Tree Oil has been recognized as a potent antiseptic, anti-fungal, and antiviral product. Tea Tree Oil contains consituents called terpenoids, which have been found to have antiseptic and antifungal activity. The compound terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant and is thought to be responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity. Tea Tree Oil is used medically in treating various ailments, skin care and cosmetic products. Tea Tree Oil is used for the following conditions: acne, athlete’s foot, dandruff, vaginitis, thrush, periodontal disease, as an antiseptic, boils, lice eczema, psoriasis, ear infection, sunburn, poison ivy, bee stings, insect bites and yeast infection. Tea Tree Oil has an anti-viral activity, especially with the herpes virus (cold sores, chicken pox, shingle blisters, and warts). It is also used as a first aid, body odor, jock itch, and in vapor therapy. While using in vapor therapy, tea tree oil helps with colds, measles, sinusitis, and viral infections. Tea Tree Oil is a natural ingredient used almost exclusively externally.

Tea Tree Oil is a very powerful stimulant. It can combat the three categories of infectious organisms: bacteria, fungi and viruses. Many antibiotics today have increasing resistance. Tea Tree Oil has a complexity with over 100 identified natural compounds which makes it basically impossible for bacteria to build up a resistance.

One popular use of the tea tree oil medicinal properties is in shampoos to help fight dandruff and other scalp problems. Many of the major suppliers of hair care product are now offering shampoos containing tea tree oil, as the demand for organic and natural products has increased. Tea tree oil is an essential oil known for its medicinal properties. It is obtained after steam distillation of the tree Melaleuca alternifolia, which is a native of New South Wales, Australia. The tea tree oil is antiseptic and antifungal in nature. Among the various 98 components of the tea tree oil, most important is terpinen-4-ol, which accounts for most of antimicrobial properties of this oil. Tea tree oil should not be confused with tea oil (the seasoning and cooking oil obtained from pressed seeds of the plant Camellia oleifera). Tea tree oil shampoo can help cleanse the hair and scalp. It soothes an itchy dry scalp and helps control dandruff. Shampoos containing 5% tea tree oil are most effective in fighting these symptoms. According to a study reported in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology a study conducted on 126 persons using a shampoo containing 5% tea tree oil with mild to moderate dandruff found reduced symptoms after a 4 week trial. The author of this study believes that the tea tree oil helps kill the specific fungus involved in dandruff. The participants were asked to rate degree of itchiness, scaliness and greasiness of their scalps. They reported significant reduction in all these factors as compared to other group using placebo shampoo. No side effects were reported in the study. Dandruff is characterized by dryness, itchiness and flakiness of the scalp. Some studies suggest that it is a specific fungus called Pityrosporum ovale and some cases can be treated by antifungal medication like, ketoconazole, terbinafine and selenium sulfide. However, Tea Tree oil is beneficial for dandruff as it is an effective anti fungal agent. The shampoo containing tea tree oil can be used everyday without causing any imbalance in natural bacteria. It can be used by both sexes and all kind of hair whether natural or colored. One can also add 2-5% tea tree oil in any natural shampoo (i.e. 2-5 cc in 98 cc of shampoo). This will help keep scalp bacteria free and avoid fungal problems. For dry hair 2% solution of tree oil in a moisturizing shampoo will help. The Benefits of using shampoo containing tea tree oil are: • It stops dry, flaky and itch scalp condition.• Clean beautiful hair• Prevents and control dandruff.• Minimize oil production and promotes healthy circulation.• It is organic and contains no animal products or harmful chemicals. Uses of Tea tree oil for Kids’ Shampoo Kids often suffer from a problem of head lice. Using a shampoo containing pesticide is not a solution. What parents don’t realize while using these harsh chemicals is the health hazards of using them on children.
