The head louse is a tiny parasitic insect that lives in human hair and subsists on small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. There are three forms of lice: the nit or egg, the nymph, and the adult. Head lice are most commonly found on the scalp, behind the ears and near the neckline at the base of the head.

Humans have been searching for ways to fight those critters since the beginning of time! Seriously, the recent epidemics in school children have brought pesticide resistant strains that are very hard to eradicate!

Keep on top of the situation by treating all the kids and adults in the home and cleaning their bedding and even car seats and sofas the same day. Get a metal comb specially designed for lice. It works much better than those cheap plastic ones that come in the kits. And be prepared to spend at least half an hour to an hour a day in bright light combing through damp hair and pulling out nits. Put any dead or treated nits/lice in a bowl of hot water and rinse down the sink. Wash all towels used during the process in hot water and dry them just like the bedding, immediately.

Treating head lice may include the use of a specialized comb to remove nits or medications that may be available over-the-counter or by prescription, depending on the severity of the infestation.

First thing you can do is buy a small fine tooth comb – the small black kind. They should be inexpensive and in any drugs store. Then, find a bowl of water you can dunk your head in while leaving your face out. Dunk your head for five minutes or for as long as you can – 15 minutes. Then use the comb. Do this 2 to 3 times a day until you get rid of them.

There are shampoos available at your local pharmacy for head lice like Rid, Nix or Kwell. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully since they have ingredients that are common in garden/farm pesticides. Chemicals are poisons and not worth risking our children’s lives. Before using dangerous harmful chemicals that seep through the scalp and into the blood stream consider alternative non chemical treatments.

Don’t use Vaseline, kerosene or mineral oils they are awful to wash out and dangerous as they can catch fire! Head lice may be found on eyelashes or eyebrows. These lice should be mechanically removed (plucked) with great care. Don’t use chemicals near the eyes!

The most effective way to get rid of head lice is with a nit comb, a good light, and a magnifying glass. This is especially true for children under two-years-old, who may have adverse reactions to head lice shampoo and other chemical head lice cures.

There are also herbal remedies to treat head lice, including products with tea tree oil and other essential oils. Because they are ‘natural,’ these are not regulated by the FDA, have not been proven to work, and should be used with caution and avoided in younger children.

The head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) is one of the many varieties of sucking lice specialized to live on different areas of various animals. It is an obligate, ectoparasitic, wingless insect spending its entire life on human scalp and feeding exclusively on human blood. Humans are the only known host of this parasite. Head lice are parasitic wingless insects. They live on people’s heads and feed on their blood. An adult is called a louse and is about the size of a sesame seed.

The eggs, called nits, are even smaller – almost like a dandruff flake. Lice and nits are easiest to detect at the neckline and behind the ears. Head lice are extremely contagious. Close contact or sharing personal belongings, such as hats or hairbrushes, puts people at risk. Children ages 3-11 and their families get head lice most often. Personal hygiene has nothing to do with getting head lice.

Here is the list of some home remedies which can help you from releiving from head louse:

Half cup white vinegar diluted with one cup water. Wash the hair as usual with shampoo. then thoroughly rinse with water, then rinse hair with vinegar(anti lice) solution. Have a spray bottle handy and pour some in the bottle, spray your hair daily to prevent the lice from coming back.

Kerosene is the old standby. Other than that, shaving of heads can be done.

Shampoo and then condition the hairs with a good brand name. Comb out the little buggers and kill them. This will have to be done over a couple of weeks to get rid of them. Wash hair regularly – daily is ideal at worst every second day.

Stay away from commercial chemical treatments! I have known they are bad for years, but just this past week met a parent whose daughter is suffering from permanent nerve damage as a result of using one of the commercial chemical formulas and finding out too late that it contains a potent pesticide – with guess which side effect!

The white vinegar, supposedly, helps loosen the glue that the lice use to affix the nit to the hair strand.

The essential oils (the combination is best, but if you can only go with one oil use Tea Tree) irritate the lice and repel many of the survivors.

You put mayonaise in your hair then put seram wrap over it then let it sit for 15 minutes. That should work! The doctor

told us that!!

Take a fine tooth comb – (found at drug stores) bend over the cloth and comb through the hair with the kerosene to remove the had lice and the nits which are the eggs of the lice.

Head Lice infests the head and body of humans. Head Lice are thos tiny little buggers which makes up go wild with itch. Head lice are parasitic insects that live in the hair and scalp of humans. The scientific name for head louse is Pediculus humanus capitis. Another name for infestation with head lice is pediculosis. Head lice develop in three forms: nits, nymphs, and adults.Coming into close contact with an already infested person. In children, contact is common during play, while riding the school bus, and during classroom activities in which children sit in groups close to each other. If you are not sure if a person has head lice, the diagnosis should be made by the local health department or a health-care provider, school nurse, or agricultural extension service worker.

Here are some of the good home remedies for these little buggers:

Regularly mix rosemary, lavender, tea tree and water in a spray bottle and mist my kids hair, before they leave the house and again in the evening, during outbreaks in the community. Use this mix to dampen the kids hair between treatments and comb through at least once a day with a nit comb.

When you wash the bedding and such, add 10-15 drops of tea tree oil to the load.

If your family is prone to getting lice, add tea tree oil to your regular shampoo during lice season, as a preventative measure. Put a few drops of tea tree or lavender oil on the neck of your kids jackets and in their hoods and hats.

Lavender and cedar oil are said to repel lice and can be applied directly to the head. Diatomaceous earth can also be used to kill lice particularly in fabics and carpeting.

Soak hair and scalp in vinegar for 15 minutes and comb out the nits.

Baby Oil or Mineral Oil. Soak your hair in it for 10 minutes. Lice are a species of the mite family that breath through their bodies. The baby oil literally suffocates them and they die.

Make sure that you use a anti-dandruff shampoos because lice feed on dead skin thats accumulated on a persons head.

You must wash all the bedding and vacuum everything good. All stuffed animals that cannot be washed go into plastic bags and be kept in a very cool place for a few days.

Mayonnaise or Olive oil. Slather on and leave it on hair overnight! It smothers the lice and makes nits slide off easily. Don’t forget to wash all bedding and stuff toys. You can also put stuff toys in a plastic bag for a week and it will kill anything on it. This might make you feel better as you know lice only like clean hair so it’s not from being dirty though it sure makes one feel that way.
