•You can use louse or nit combs which are of great helps in minimizing their population.

•Always keep your hair well-groomed and clean by using the proper shampoo.

•Washing your hair everyday and keeping it clean may just be one of the deterrents of warding off this problem.

•Going bald or having short hair makes it easier to remove the lice.

•Keep your surroundings clean.

•If you start the treatment keep in mind to clean everything around simultaneously to prevent re-infestation.

Home Remedies for Lice

In your regular shampoo mix 3 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon tea tree oil and 1 teaspoon eucalyptus oil. Apply this solution and cover your head tightly with a plastic bag for half an hour and then rinse it off. This can be used as a remedy to fight off these invaders.

After washing your hair apply mayonnaise all over your scalp. Keep it overnight by covering it. Rinse it the next morning and remove the lice with the help of a lice comb. The lice would slide through your hair with ease.

Apply Vaseline freely on your scalp to suffocate and remove the lice. It may be tiring affair as Vaseline is not that easy to remove. Before washing you can apply corn flour to make the process easy.

Make a concoction by mixing 20 drops each of eucalyptus essential oil and tea tree oil, 10 drops each of aniseed essential oil and lemon oil with 75ml olive oil. Apply this on your hair and leave it for an hour. Later, wash it to get positive results.

You can rub Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash on your scalp. It may happen to kill the lice due to the presence of essential oils like eucalyptol, thymol, menthol and methyl salicylate and alcohol.

You can make a solution of baby oil or any other mineral oil with equal proportion of vinegar. Apply this on your hair. Once doused with this solution cover your hair for one hour before shampooing it. This may help in reducing the lice due to the inbound properties of vinegar and the oil.

Pediculosis , more commonly known as head lice , is one of the most common hair disorders affecting school-aged children – and one of the most infuriating for parents to deal with. This article contains information on what causes the condition, symptoms to look for and how to treat the condition effectively.

What Causes Pediculosis ?

Pediculosis occurs when the scalp is infested by small, wingless creatures known as head lice. Contrary to popular myth, head lice cannot jump from person to person. Instead, they are transmitted by close personal contact, or contact with the personal effects or clothing of, someone with the condition.

What Are Head Lice ?

Head lice are tiny, wingless creatures that feed on human blood, spending their whole life on the scalp. They are related to body lice, and more distantly to pubic lice. During their life cycle, female lice lay eggs – commonly called nits – which are attached to human hair using a glue-like substance.

How Does The Condition Present Itself?

The most common symptom is itching on or around the head area, as a result of bites from the lice. Bites may be evident high up on the back of the neck or behind the ears, particularly in long-hair individuals. Close inspection of the hair may reveal moving lice, or nits stuck to the hair shafts.

Treatment of Head Lice

A wide variety of commercially-available products and home-remedies may be used to treat the condition. Commercial preparations containing pyrethrins are usually very effective at killing the lice and eggs, as are a number of home remedies. One such method is mixing mayonnaise, vinegar and a little tea-tree oil and ‘shampooing’ the hair with this mixture. The mayonnaise suffocates the lice, while the vinegar and tea-trea oil kill the eggs. Removal of the lice and nits is also necessary. Smothering the hair with olive oil, hair conditioner or mayonnaise breaks the ‘glue’ holding the eggs to the hair shafts, making them much easier to remove.

How To Prevent Pediculosis

Many schools nowadays have a policy whereby either children with pediculosis are excluded from school or childcare settings until the condition is treated or, at the very least, that the condition must be promptly treated by parents. Outbreaks in families can be prevented from spreading by washing all bedding and towels belonging to the afflicted person. Cleaning the home area as a whole generally isn’t necessary, as lice tend to die quickly once removed from their food source.

Head lice are a common, controversial and frustrating problem for parents. And the controversy isn’t usually about where they got infected, but instead revolves around how you are going to get rid of the lice.

On one side of the debate are the people who believe that head lice have developed resistance to regular treatments, so that they no longer work. Other experts believe that resistance is not a big problem, and treatment failures are because parents didn’t remove the nits or that the child was misdiagnosed.

Head Lice Symptoms

The main symptom of a head lice infestation is an itchy scalp from the bites of the lice. These bites can then become infected, and may appear red or crusty, and may lead to your child developing swollen lymph glands in his neck.

Diagnosis of Head Lice

In addition to having the symptoms listed above, children with head lice will have gray or reddish brown live head lice scurrying around their scalp. Lice are small, about the size of a sesame seed, and although they don’t fly or hop, they can crawl very fast, making them hard to spot.

Another sign that can help you make the diagnosis, is finding nits, or lice eggs, attached to your child’s hair. Nits are small, oval shaped and usually a yellowish-white color and are firmly attached to the side of hair shafts. If you confirm that your child does have live lice or nits, it is important that you don’t panic about your child’s head lice.

Head Lice Treatments

The main treatments for head lice usually involve using a head lice shampoo, like: Head Lice Dr, and then patiently and diligently removing nits with a lice comb. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for whatever products you choose to use.

For light infestations or if you are uncomfortable using an anti-lice shampoo, you can try to simply remove the live lice and nits manually or use a full-service company that is dedicated to the detection and removal of head lice.

As there are often a lot of nits on a child and they are hard to find and remove, you may continue to find nits for days after treatment. This doesn’t mean that the treatment didn’t work. If you continue to find live lice after treating with a anti-lice shampoo then that likely does mean that it didn’t work or your child was reinfected.

Also be sure to wash your child’s clothing and bedding in hot water and vacuum to remove lice and nits from furniture, carpets, stuffed animals, etc. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you really only have to clean “items, clothing, furniture, or carpeting that have been in contact with the head of the person with infestation in the 24 to 48 hours before treatment,” and not everything in your house though. And you can put anything that you can’t wash in a large plastic bag for a few weeks if you are really concerned that it is infested.

What You Need To Know Don’t Panic About Head Lice – Unfortunately, the first reaction for many parents in dealing with head lice is to panic. Panicking is not going to kill the head lice though and will likely lead to over-treatment and anxiety in your child who may be concerned that they have “bugs” in their hair. Nits hatch in 7 to 10 days and develop into an adult in another 7 to 10 days which can then lay more (up to 100) eggs. So it is important to remove all of the nits to break this cycle. Also, since anti-lice shampoos don’t usually kill nits, you have to usually retreat the child in 7 to 10 days to kill any newly hatched lice. Children are often misdiagnosed with head lice because they have hair casts that resemble nits, or they have dead or empty nits that are far away from the scalp. If you think your child has lice but you don’t actually see any live lice, see your Pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Be careful before trying ‘alternative’ treatments, like mayonaise, vaseline, olive oil or Tea tree oil. Although they are ‘natural’ treatments, they are untested, and products like mayonaise can be hard to get out of a child’s hair (dishwashing is supposed to make it easier though). Alternative medications for resistant lice might include Ovide (malathion, an insecticide), Lindane, the antibiotic Bactrim (which kills symbiotic bacteria inside the lice), Ivermectim, or using Elimite, a stronger version of Nix which is usually used to treat scabies. Viq (Benzyl Alcohol Lotion 5%) was recently approved to treat children over six months of age with head lice. Unlike other head lice shampoos which are mostly pesticides, Viq is a water-soluble gel that works to suffocate head lice. Do your homework or see your pediatrician before treating your child with multiple remedies. please visit Head Lice Dr, this is a great sources of detailed information on head lice infestations and treatments.

Passed down from generation to generation, many home treatment head-louse remedies have stood the test of time and can be quite effective at ridding your house of the bothersome pests. Most of these remedies require multiple treatment applications to be completely successful, but many feel the extra effort is well worth avoiding harsh chemicals and a possible allergic reaction.

Home treatment head-louse remedies may incorporate the use of several common and inexpensive household items, all of which are safe and non-toxic. Here are some helpful tips for safely and effectively ridding your house of a lice infestation:

- Before beginning treatment, the hair should be washed normally, blown dry with hot air and then brushed vigorously using a bristled brush to loosen nits, removing the rest by hand after treatment.

- Combine equal amounts of oils of lavender, geranium, and tea tree with a base of olive oil. Massage the mixture into the scalp, loosening the nits or eggs, allowing them to be easily removed by hand or with a fine-toothed comb. Flea combs work better than most of the combs that come in lice removal kits.

- Combine olive oil, tea tree oil and shampoo, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil. Apply to the scalp and hair, leaving in place for one hour before rinsing with hot water and shampooing again.

- Baby oil and equal amounts of vinegar may be applied to the scalp and massaged through the hair. Leave on the hair and cover the head with a shower cap for one hour before using regular shampoo.

- Massage petroleum jelly all over the scalp and hair, one of the messier home treatment head-louse remedies, but effective at smothering the lice. It will be difficult to rid the hair of the jelly, usually requiring numerous shampoos before it will be completely clean. Try using flour to absorb some before shampooing. Mayonnaise may also be used in a similar fashion.

- Perhaps the simplest home remedy is preventing an infestation altogether by teaching children simple proactive approaches, such as not sharing personal items with friends, or trying on hats in stores, or coming in contact with another person’s hair.

If you are ever in doubt about any home treatment head-louse remedies, simply ask your doctor for their recommendation as to whether or not the method is safe or effective. Some very unorthodox and potentially dangerous myths exist about removing head lice. One should never, ever use kerosene or gasoline or isopropyl alcohol as a method of removing lice, as serious injury may result. Also, veterinary products for the removal of fleas and ticks should never be used, as well as any type of lawn-care chemicals.

Home treatment head-louse remedies may need more than one application and should be coupled with treating the whole house to avoid chances of a re-infestation. All clothing, towels, and bedding should be washed in water hotter than 130 degrees Fahrenheit or 55 degrees Celsius and then dried on the hottest dryer setting. Add tea tree oil to the hot water for some extra insurance. All carpets and throw rugs should be thoroughly vacuumed, and hair care items should be either discarded or soaked in rubbing alcohol for at least an hour.

Head Lice infests the head and body of humans. Head Lice are thos tiny little buggers which makes up go wild with itch. Head lice are parasitic insects that live in the hair and scalp of humans. The scientific name for head louse is Pediculus humanus capitis. Another name for infestation with head lice is pediculosis. Head lice develop in three forms: nits, nymphs, and adults.Coming into close contact with an already infested person. In children, contact is common during play, while riding the school bus, and during classroom activities in which children sit in groups close to each other. If you are not sure if a person has head lice, the diagnosis should be made by the local health department or a health-care provider, school nurse, or agricultural extension service worker.

Here are some of the good home remedies for these little buggers:

Regularly mix rosemary, lavender, tea tree and water in a spray bottle and mist my kids hair, before they leave the house and again in the evening, during outbreaks in the community. Use this mix to dampen the kids hair between treatments and comb through at least once a day with a nit comb.

When you wash the bedding and such, add 10-15 drops of tea tree oil to the load.

If your family is prone to getting lice, add tea tree oil to your regular shampoo during lice season, as a preventative measure. Put a few drops of tea tree or lavender oil on the neck of your kids jackets and in their hoods and hats.

Lavender and cedar oil are said to repel lice and can be applied directly to the head. Diatomaceous earth can also be used to kill lice particularly in fabics and carpeting.

Soak hair and scalp in vinegar for 15 minutes and comb out the nits.

Baby Oil or Mineral Oil. Soak your hair in it for 10 minutes. Lice are a species of the mite family that breath through their bodies. The baby oil literally suffocates them and they die.

Make sure that you use a anti-dandruff shampoos because lice feed on dead skin thats accumulated on a persons head.

You must wash all the bedding and vacuum everything good. All stuffed animals that cannot be washed go into plastic bags and be kept in a very cool place for a few days.

Mayonnaise or Olive oil. Slather on and leave it on hair overnight! It smothers the lice and makes nits slide off easily. Don’t forget to wash all bedding and stuff toys. You can also put stuff toys in a plastic bag for a week and it will kill anything on it. This might make you feel better as you know lice only like clean hair so it’s not from being dirty though it sure makes one feel that way.

Head lice are parasitic wingless insects. They live on people’s heads and feed on their blood. head lice is very common problem. Many people get head lice in the United States each year. Head lice are tiny (pin-head sized) grey-brown, wingless insects, which live by sucking blood from the scalp. Their eggs are known as nits and they are laid glued to the base of hairs, and look like tiny white specks. The eggs hatch after 7 to 10 days, and 10 to 14 days after hatching the lice are mature and between 2 and 4 mm long (the size of a sesame seed). Head lice are common in schoolchildren, particularly between the ages of 4 and 11, but anyone with hair can catch them. The earliest and most common symptom of a head lice infestation is itching, particularly in the area behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.

Intense scratching may lead to secondary bacterial infection. Head lice can’t live on pets, such as cats or dogs. There are a number of very effective treatments for head lice. The most important step in treating head lice is to treat the person and other family members with medicine to kill the lice. Malathion works as well as other agents used to kill lice. Malathion must be left on for at least eight hours for it to work. Pyrethrin and permethrin are quite safe to humans. Lindane, however, can be toxic.Permethrin may work better than lindane, though most trials were done before permethrin was widely used and resistance to the drug developed. Pyrethrins are used as a 0.33% shampoo or mousse. Never use gasoline or kerosene. These products can be extremely dangerous.

Aromatherapy has been frequently used to treat for lice, but this has not been confirmed as a viable treatment. Herbal treatments ( tea tree oil) are sometimes used to treat head lice. Avoid head-to-head contact common during play at school and at home. Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person. Do not share clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair ribbons. Don’t leave the shampoo or rinse in hair longer than directed. Rinse hair well after the treatment. Regular combing of hair using the bug-busting method can help with early detection as well as treatment. If your child has long hair, tie it back as this helps to reduce the likelihood of contact between their hair and that of an infected child.

Head Lice Home Remedies Tips

1. For head lice problem wash your hair with vinegar.

2. Apply coconut oil to your head after shampoo and condition.

3. Apply a mixture of lemon and butter on your head, wait for 15 seconds and then rinse your head.

Unfortunately, many of us have had a run-in with head lice at one time or another, especially those of us with school-aged children. Having lice is not a sign of being unclean, as the pests can infect people of any age and background regardless of their hygiene habits or lack thereof. Luckily there are several common head louse treatment methods that can be completely effective at getting rid of the harmless, but pesky creatures.

Any type of common head louse treatment, in order to be thoroughly effective, must include treating the entire house as well. Although a louse does not survive for long after falling from a host, they are still easily passed from person to person, and a missed nit or egg can re-infest the whole household. It isn’t necessary to spend a lot of money or time using commercial products to rid a house of lice.

Here are some easy tricks for ridding your home of lice and their nits:

- Lice cannot survive in a high-heat environment, so all bed linens, including blankets and mattress pads as well as the sheets, should be washed in very hot water. Water hot enough to kill lice and their eggs must be at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit or over 54.4 degrees Celsius. Clothing should also be washed in water of the same temperature and then put in the clothes dryer on the hottest setting for at least 20 minutes. If you have clothing that cannot be washed in this manner, use a dry cleaner instead.

- Any items that cannot be washed and dried or dry-cleaned, such as stuffed animals or plush toys, should be sealed in airtight bags for at least two weeks.

- All carpets and upholstered furniture should be thoroughly vacuumed. Don’t forget the car and any throw rugs you may have.

- Wash hair-care items in very hot water or soak them in medicated shampoo for at least an hour. You may also soak items such as barrettes, headbands, brushes, and combs in rubbing alcohol for an hour to kill head lice.

Another helpful but common head louse treatment tip is to simply wet the hair, which temporarily immobilizes the lice, before thoroughly combing the hair with a special, fine-toothed comb. Some swear by home remedies such as completely saturating the hair with petroleum jelly or mayonnaise, or using natural, herbal oils including lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, and oil of rosemary.

The following common head louse treatment methods are simple and effective, yet gentle on even sensitive skin and don’t use any harsh or toxic chemicals:

- Mix a teaspoon of garlic paste with an equal amount of lime juice and apply to the scalp. Leave on for about half an hour before thoroughly shampooing.

- Grind almonds into three teaspoons of lime juice, applying to the scalp and hair for half an hour before shampooing.

- Mayonnaise or petroleum jelly may be applied to the scalp and hair in an attempt to suffocate the lice, although both are rather difficult to remove from the hair, requiring several washings.

- Mix a few teaspoons of tea tree oil with olive oil, applying to the hair and scalp and leaving in place for about an hour before rinsing out and shampooing.

If you are like most parents, you want a safe and effective treatment for head lice. Most treatments are toxic and are not recommended for toddlers. Here are three different treatments from parents. As always, this is not medical advice. Please check with your doctor if you have any concerns.

Treatment#1

Combine 1/2 tsp. each of Eucalyptus, Pennyroyal and Rosemary. Then add 2 1/2 tbls. pure olive oil. An Adult needs to try the mixture on his/her skin to make sure it doesn’t burn. If it does, add more olive oil. After washing your child’s hair with very hot water (as hot as the child can stand!) Comb the oil mixture through hair with a regular comb (throw away kind) Then use a flea comb, comb out any nits or eggs. Tie a cotton scarf around child’s head and leave on over night. It may tingle, but if it burns wash out immediately and dilute the mixture and try again.

THE NEXT MORNING

Wash hair with a good tea tree shampoo. This should take care of the lice, however if necessary repeat the treatment. To prevent lice (when it has been reported in your child’s school) rub tea tree oil or sassafras oil into the scalp.

Treatment#2

A natural alternative to killing head lice is to use mayonnaise. Cover the entire scalp and hair with mayonnaise, cover with plastic wrap and leave on about half an hour. Shampoo and remove all the nits or eggs.

Treatment#3

For best effectiveness, use a safe, pure soap like Botanic GOLD™ and carefully follow the directions below. Every step is important.

On a dry head, start at the nape of the neck along the hairline and work around the head saturating the hair as you go moving towards the crown where the hair is tied up. Remove the clips or pony tail and continue to apply the soap using enough to completely saturate the hair.

Massage the head and work into lather then comb through hair to ensure coverage (use a metal, regular toothed comb). Wrap or tie the hair back up on top of the head. Every ten minutes or so, massage the hair until 30 to 40 minutes have past. DO NOT RINSE AND DO NOT ALLOW TO DRY. (Reapply if necessary to keep moist.) The next day, follow the instructions above “THE NEXT MORNING”.

NOTE: DO NOT USE Botanic Insecticidal Soap.

Sanitation Instructions for ALL Treatments

Lice are highly contagious and it is extremely important that they are eliminated as fast and completely as possible. When lice are first detected, it is wise to launder everything with which the infected person has come in contact. Use hot water and a non-toxic liquid soap.
