A healthy and all-natural approach to hair care is not as difficult as you might think. Some of the most expensive hair care products in the world might claim to be natural products but all too often they contain detergents, fragrances, and synthetic ingredients, truth be told the lavender shampoo you love so much is full of synthesized stuff and probably smells nothing like the real thing at all.

Making your own natural products for your hair is not only incredibly easy but its economical, and most importantly its fun! Most of the supplies to make all natural products for bath, body, and hair care can be found in the grocery store, the local health food store or even the local farmers market, and any supplies that you might buy at the farmers market has the added benefit of going to support local farmers and crafts people in your community so it is not only good for your hair but good for your community too.

It is important to note that when making your own natural hair products you should always use the highest quality of ingredients and supplies. Using good quality ingredients will always yield better natural products. Whenever possible use organic herbs and organic essential oil, this will make your hair even healthier. Use either distilled or if at all possible spring water again this will yield a higher quality of product, and there is just something magical about washing your hair with a spring water product. Finally always keep everything squeaky clean, this includes work surfaces, utensils, and your hands, this will prevent contamination of your natural products.

There are many different combinations of herbs and essential oils that you could try depending on your hair type, color or any other special considerations you may have.

Chamomile and calendula are great herbs if you want to bring out blond highlights; likewise, sage and comfrey are the best herbs to bring out dark highlights. For oily hair rosemary and yarrow are excellent, if the hair is dry two of the best herbs to use are marshmallow and nettle.

Essential oils also have their uses for hair problems, some great essential oils for oily hair are basil, lemon, and ylang-ylang, are all great for oily hair but they can also treat dandruff, encourage hair growth, give golden highlights, and make hair thicker.

Rose is great for fine hair and also is soothing to the scalp. Peppermint and Rosemary are not only excellent for dry scalp but they promote healthy hair growth. Lavender and Tea Tree are two of the most popular essential oils for bath and body product, are not only good for the hair but they are also antibacterial and are two of the essential oils used for treating many conditions including what all parents fear, the dreaded head lice, and calendula infused oil is used for treating another common childhood scalp problem, cradle cap.

Try making your own natural products for all your families hair care needs, you will love the results.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to treat medical conditions, to alleviate psychological ailments, for cosmetic purposes, and to reduce stress. The essential oils of aromatherapy have the power to enhance both your physical and mental state.

Essential oils are extracted from living plants and trees. When essential oils are used appropriately, most can be used at home safely, enjoyably, and with beneficial effects. Keep the following seven things in mind if you want to try aromatherapy at home.

(1) Most essential oils should never be applied directly without diluting them. Only lavender and tea tree oil are exceptions to this rule.

(2) Essential oils are flammable, so use extreme caution around flames and heat sources. If you use a burner to diffuse the oil, put water in the burner first. The essential oil will enter the air as the water evaporates.

(3) Essential oils are for external use only. On very rare occasions, a qualified aromatherapist may prescribe essential oils by mouth. Some essential oils can be very toxic if swallowed. Even essential oils that have a therapeutic effect when diluted in certain oral treatments (like mouthwash) should not be swallowed.

(4) Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children.

(5) If you want to use essential oils during pregnancy, on babies, or with young children, please seek the advice of a trained, qualified aromatherapist first.

(6) If you are using essential oils as part of homeopathic or herbal medicine treatment, get advice from homeopathic or herbal medicine practitioners as well as from an aromatherapist.

(7) Some medical conditions require a doctor’s care, and not all medical conditions benefit from aromatherapy. Always check with your doctor first before undertaking aromatherapy for the treatment of any medical condition.

Following these seven principles for safe aromatherapy will help your experience with aromatherapy to be both enjoyable and beneficial.

All essential oils should be used safely in order to treat various conditions and promote inner peace and relaxation. However, all essential oils are not safe. In fact, some of them can negatively interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications. They can either dull or increase their power. This is why it is imperative to perform your due diligence, which may include speaking with a trained aromotherapist, before you begin using essential oils. The essential oils that are generally considered as safe are lavender and tea tree oil.

Lavender essential oil is created by extracting the oil from the lavender plant. It is used for both medicinal and enjoyment purposes. Studies have shown that lavender oil is effective in treating alopecia, stress, insomnia and even acts as an anti-bacterial agent. It can effectively be used with massage and acupuncture. Lavender is believed to be able to improve sleep, help individuals relax and lighten one’s mood by slowing down the nervous system. In Germany, lavender tea is given to people who suffer from the inability to sleep. Lavender oil is also believed to be able to help individuals that suffer from headaches, acne, fungal infections and eczema.

Tea tree oil is the other essential oil that is safe to use. You are likely to find lot of products that are infused with tea tree oil at your local beauty supply store or even Wal-mart.

There are some precautions that should be taken. Some studies have found that tea tree oil may affect hormones and may cause the breast tissue in boys to enlarge. Consequently, you may not want to allow your teen son to use it. Tea tree oil is generally safe for external use, but should never be taken internally.

However, tea tree oil does have some very good uses. It can be used to help in the healing of burns, cuts and skin infections. Other common uses include the treatment of acne, dandruff, eczema, boils, psoriasis, thrush, dandruff and athletes foot.

Tea tree oil and lavender oil are two of the most safe essential oils available. They are generally considered safe by the traditional and alternative health communities. If you have any questions about any intended uses for either of these essential oils, it is recommended that you speak with an aromatherapist who can provide you with the proper guidance.

Briefly… about the virus…
Influenza A is a virus with many subtypes that are identified and categorized by differences in two proteins, hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). Differences are due to the rapid mutation of the virus. The scientific community has learned quite a bit about Influenza A virus, but the fact remains that we are unable to know what we don’t know and the virus mutates rapidly, becoming something new. Antiviral drugs do not eliminate the virus; they inhibit the replication of the virus. Learning more about the life-cycle of a virus has lead to the development of anti-viral strategies that target the virus at different stages in that cycle.

Timeliness…
We are currently experiencing a flu outbreak that may be very significant and potentially devastating to individuals and communities, as well on a much larger level. We should all be using common sense in protecting and taking care of ourselves and our families. I won’t use this as a pulpit for my position on things that are related and responsible in varied degree. I will give you some information that you may want to have to arm and educate yourself.

Essential oils and viral replication…
All essential oils are anti-microbial to a degree. There is a tremendous amount of anecdotal, cultural and historical information that tells us that certain plants are effective against certain aliments. I am focusing here on essential oils that have laboratory documented anti-viral efficacy, although I think we should listen to our Grandmothers… anyone ever been given schwedenkrauter for whatever ailed you?

Coconut oil – not an essential oil but worth mentioning. About 50% of the fatty acid in Coconut oil is Lauric acid, the most essential fatty acid for the building of an immune system. In the body, it is converted to monolaurin, a powerful monoglyceride that destroys lipid-coated viruses (such as cytomegalovirus, HIV, herpes, and influenza) as well as pathogenic bacteria. I use this on the skin and in the kitchen. The smell and taste of organic raw coconut oil are just fabulous.

Oregano oil - A study cited in Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials 2009, 8:8 indicate that Oreganum vulgare and Artemisia vulgaris have inhibitory effects the replication of the Yellow Fever virus. Apparently the presence of O. vulgare essential oil in the culture medium at 11.1 ug/mL produced a 100% reduction of virus yield. (A Ug is a microgram, 1/1000000 of a gram or 1/1000 of a milligram.) Oregano eo seems to be effective because of direct inactivation of the virus rather than being effective only at a stage in the life cycle of the virus.

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) was also tested in the above referenced study and produced similar striking results. Mugwort is very high in ketones and should be only used by the experienced.

Tea Tree - A study conducted by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases revealed that replication of a strain of influenza was severely inhibited of the Tea Tree eo was introduced within 2 hours of infection. This suggests that Tea Tree eo interferes in an early stage of replication but after viral adsorption. Tea Tree eo is inexpensive and is pretty stable (has a long shelf life).

I grew up across the street from the Village Sauna and up the hill from the American River in Fair Oaks, California. Native plants and salves and tinctures were ever present. Victoria Edwards was a massage therapist at the Sauna and lived next door to us on Harmony Hill. Her handmade massage blends of the 70′s grew into Leydet Aromatics, a world-wide supplier of essential oils and aromatherapy supplies recognized for quality and customer service. I began working for Leydet in 1995, years of focused learning and growth followed. When Victoria began a sabbatical in Southern France in 2004, there became a need for a restructuring of the business that she had built. Out of this, Emily’s Oils and Essentials was born; a company dedicated to continuing the legacy of Leydet by serving customers in the spirit of healing and the rightful use of plants. I intend to provide a seamless transition for loyal Leydet customers and to continue to introduce people to the sensory pleasures and healing properties of nature’s gifts

Everyone knows how great it feels to get a good massage. With the help of a massage, you can alleviate sore and tired muscles while also releasing stress. In order to increase the benefits of a massage, however, you might want to include aromatherapy massage oil in your massage sessions.

What is Aromatherapy Massage Oil?

Aromatherapy massage oil is a special type of massage oil that contains aromatherapy essential oils. Since it is a massage oil, it contains special oils that make it slippery and easy to glide over the skin. This way, friction is reduced and a more soothing and relaxing massage can be enjoyed. In addition to containing oil, however, it also contains aromatherapy essential oils.

Aromatherapy essential oils are oils that have been extracted from plants. By extracting the oils through a distillation process, aromatherapy essential oils are able to maintain the beneficial properties of the plant from which they are derived.

How Does Aromatherapy Works?

To understand how does aromatherapy works, it is important to first gain a better understating of essential oils. Since aromatherapy essential oils are a concentrated version of the plants they are derived from, it takes very little of the oil to receive the benefits the plant provides. Therefore, aromatherapy massage oil typically only contains a few drops of essential oils. Yet, these oils are potent enough to provide benefits to the recipient.

With aromatherapy, the essential oils are inhaled. As a result, the scent of the essential oils has an effect on the brain, particularly on the limbic system. Depending upon the plant used, the aroma of the plant as well as its healing properties has a different effect on the body. Aromatherapy essential oils are even more potent when used along with massage, as the combination helps to further relax the body and to surround the olfactory system with the scent of the oils.

Some of the benefits of aromatherapy essential oils and the plants that provide these benefits include:

Antibacterial – cinnamon, clove, lime, rosemary and tea tree oil
Anti-inflammatory – bay leaf, black cumin, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus and sage
Antifungal – clove, juniper, lavender, tea tree oil and thyme
Antiviral – ginger, hyssop, lemongrass, peppermint, sandlewood, tea tree oil, thyme

Aromatherapy essential oils can also be used to change a person’s mood, such as using peppermint to energize the body or chamomile to help the body relax.

A look at how does aromatherapy works and how to include aromatherapy essential oils in an aromatherapy massage oil in order to improve the effects of the massage.

Essential oils are fundamental ingredients in hair care products. From sage to thyme and fenugreek, essential oil extracts, help to soothe the scalp, while promoting hair growth, moisturizing and adding body and manageability. Let’s take a look at the more common essential oils for hair products.

Basil: Basil promotes growth by stimulating circulation and works well with fenugreek and ivy burdock herbs as well. Basil is used in shampoos and conditioners designed for scalp health. Basil nurtures the scalp while enhancing circulation to the root bringing much needed blood flow.

Burdock: Not too many hair care products carry burdock – that is a shame because it is so beneficial to the scalp and to proper hair growth. It helps scalp and hair cell renewal. It stimulates blood flow and helps with hair loss in both men and women.

Chamomile: Chamomile is the most soothing of the essential oils and is included in many shampoos or conditioners. Chamomile helps to retract inflamed skin cells from chemical procedures, the sun and helps scaly scalps.

Fenugreek: Fenugreek has long been used for stimulating blood flow especially to minor capillaries. Fenugreek makes great topical applications like in shampoos, conditioners and in hair stimulators.

Fenugreek for hair care is an excellent choice especially for hair growth. Fenugreek also compliments sage, clary sage, lemongrass, lemon peel, burdock and ivy extract.

Lavender also soothes the scalp and the hair. Many people order baby shampoo with lavender as it can help calm infants.

Lemon: Lemon Essential oil gives golden highlights. It works well for treatments for dry scalp, dandruff, lice, and under active sebaceous glands. The sebum on the hair is what keeps it from drying out. Curly hair tends to be more dry and can benefit from lemon essential oils. Be very careful to only use lemon on hair that is too oily as this can seriously dry out the hair after just one washing or rinse.

Peppermint: Peppermint helps to stimulate blood flow to the root of the hair. This helps the hair to receive proper nourishment and to grow correctly. It is a great for hair that is growing slow or hair that is thinning. Peppermint makes the scalp tingle and this is what stimulates the blood flow to the hair. This stimulation can help with hair loss and thinning hair in women and men.

Rosemary essential oil works great for dry hair and dandruff as well as itchy scalp!

Sage is one of the best scalp clarifiers. It deep cleanses impurities and works well with other herbs to heal scalp problems such as scalp psoriasis. It is one of the most effective oils to develop a dandruff shampoo.

Tea Tree Oil: Works daily to get to the heart of dandruff and other scalp conditions that can be helped with Tea Tree oil as it works to purify the scalp. It is often included with Jojoba oil for hair as the two are used to deep clean. Tea tree oil works extremely good for those that suffer from scalp psoriasis and scalp dandruff.

Thyme is often used in deep cleansing shampoo and works well when used with even the mildest cleansing agents. It works well when combined with other oily scalp products.

So, there is a good summary and gives you a little bit of helpful “ammunition” next time you might stop to look at the ingredients of your favorite hair care product.

All told, hair care is the sum of its ingredients and effectiveness is often a result of a combination of ingredients that help dry hair, oily or greasy hair, hair growth and general hair and scalp health.

Essential oils is the name given to more than 90 pure extracts from various plants. Despite the nomer ‘oil,’ essential oils are not, in fact petroleum products. They can be rubbed on the skin or used in aromatherapy. High quality essential oils are completely derived naturally and won’t clog pores. Because of their cleanliness, many essential oils can be used to help diminish acne.

Two of these oils are tea tree oil and emu oil. Emu oil, however, is not technically an essential oil, as it is derived from an animal. The emu is a mainly flightless bird originating mainly in Australia. The indigenous people of Australia, the Aborigines, use emu oil for its healing and restorative effects, particularly with regard to joint pain. Today, however, emu oil is used for a variety of purposes, one of those is to lessen the problem of acne.

Because emu oil is non-greasy and won’t clog pores, it makes a good skin moisturizer and softener. Lotion, no matter how ‘clean’ it is can still clog pores. Emu oil does the same job, but without the gunk that can cause acne.

Tea tree oil is another good choice for use on acne. This essential oil helps heal scars and won’t clog pores. Like other essential oils, tea tree oil can also be used for aromatherapy, soothing, even as it reduces acne. Common tea tree oil and New Zealand tea tree oil are the two common forms. The sent is balsamic and woody. The New Zealand variety has a warmer, earthier aroma.

Essential oils can be combined, and emu oil is an excellent carrier of essential oils, including tea tree oil. A combination of emu and tea tree oils can give softer, moisturized skin with a pleasant smell—all while reducing acne.

Essential oils are really focused and powerful. Essential oils are extremely concentrated liquids that can be detrimental if not used cautiously. Essential oils are the gist of the plant. They are not the same as fragrance oils. Essential oils are derived from genuine plants, fragrance oils are artificially created fragrances or carry man-made substances and do not provide the curative benefits that vital oils provide. There are many uses for vital oils, from curative footbaths to fragrant room sprays. Essential oils participate the system primarily in three ways – applied to the rind, inhaled, or ingested. Within each of these.

There are many different kinds of application methods. Drops of essential oils are placed in a water-based solution, shaken, and sprayed into the air in order to deodorize a room or set a mood. Add a few drops of oil to water in a spray bottle and use as an air freshener. Use essential oils in the bath by adding three to eight drops to the tub, depending on the oil. Add it just before you get in and soak for at least 10 minutes. Use oils as an inhalant to treat congestion or stress (try peppermint or sandalwood). Put four drops in a bowl of hot, almost boiling water. Drape a towel over your head to make a tent and breathe in the steam for a few minutes.

The toilet is well fragrant by placing oil-scented cotton balls in inconspicuous places. Sprinkle oils immediately onto silk or dried blossom arrangements or wreaths. Essential oils or blends take fantastic perfumes. Create your own private gist. Add 25 drops to 1 oz of scent alcohol and permit to age for two weeks before using. Essential oils are mixed into a home oil such assweet almond or grapeseed oil. Essential oils are placed in this device, sometimes with water , and sometimes with warmth so they vaporize. Essential oils should never be immediately burned as the chemical system is dramatically changed with incineration.

For burms or scalds, drop Tea Tree oil directly on the effected area. People with liver or kidney disease should only use essential oils under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Essential oils are considered to be therapeutic grade when they are distilled under low temperatures and low pressure relative to the specific plant material. Essential oils are considered to be therapeutic grade when they are distilled under low temperatures and low pressure relative to the specific plant material. If the temperature and pressure are too high it effects the constituents in the oils and reduces the therapeutic value.
