Nail fungus is just like any nail or skin disorder that can be cured and prevented by artificial means such as creams that should be applied topically to kill the fungus from the outside. There are also some pills to be taken orally to kill the fungus from the inside. Some of these products are usually recommended by dermatologists while some products can be bought even without the doctor’s prescription. On the other hand, there are also home remedies that are very natural as well as less expensive. Natural oils have been a part of home remedies for all sorts of health disorder. The popular essential oils are prevalent in curing different ailments and disorders such as hair fall, eczema and even nail fungus.

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is used for treating several conditions such as dandruff, boils, athlete’s foot and acne. Nail fungus is also included in the list of conditions that this natural antibiotic can cure. The tea tree oil came from the extracts of the native tree in Australia called Melaleuca Alternifolia. Tea tree oil is a very effective essential oil because it contains anti-fungal and antiseptic compounds that are best for killing fungus and preventing the fungus’ development in the nails and nail beds. It is also an excellent skin disinfectant as well. Purchase the item that says one hundred percent pure tea tree oil. It must be applied on the affected nail and skin at least two or three times every day. If it is used at fingernail, it would take at least six months before the nail is completely cured. However, if it used at toenails, it would take much longer, about eight to twelve months depending on the severity of the nail fungus.

The oil from the extracts of oregano leaves is also used as natural oil in treating toenail and fingernail fungus. Oregano oil is considered by many as the best anti-fungal oil ever. However, this is oil is stronger compared to tea tree oil. It may cause irritation for some who have sensitive skin so it is best to seek advice from those who are professional in skin care. In case this happens, you may combine oregano oil with a few drops of aloe or olive oil. Use something that would get the oil mixture under your nail such as toothbrush or cotton buds. Some testifies that after using oregano oil, using natural solvents will make the essential oil more effective in killing the fungus living in the nails. This is because the natural solvent allows the oregano oil to penetrate through the nails and skin faster. As a result, the affected area will dry and heal faster.

There are more essential oils that can help prevent and cure nail fungus. This includes lavender oil, clove oil, and more. However, like any other medicine or remedies, you must first analyze your skin condition (if you have an allergy to that certain oil or if you have sensitive skin) to avoid further damage in the nail and in the skin as well.

Essential Oils have very good home uses. They can be used to clean and disinfect your home. Tea tree oil mixed with distilled water works just as a well any cleaner that you may buy from your local Wal-Mart or grocery store. It is also less expensive then your retail cleaners. Using just a few drops of essential oils will go along way.

Essential oils are perfect for cleaning places like your bathroom or your kitchen. One of the other benefits of using essential oils as cleaners and disinfectants are that you benefit from inhaling essential oils as a well. They are also not as harmful as many of the caustic chemicals that are found in home cleaners.

Instead of purchasing expensive Glade Plug-ins or other types of air fresheners or air scents for your home, boiling water and then adding your favorite essential oil, will allow you to fill your home with your favorite scent. It is also much cheaper and more environmentally safe. Creating your own air fresheners with your favorite scents allows you to change the smells in your house according to your mood and liking, without spending a ton of money.

Some essential oils are also effective for treating minor cuts, skin irritations, and even for sore muscles. Adding a few drops of essential oil of to your bath or diluting it with a carrier oil and then adding it to your skin, will help you remedy some of these minor conditions. Tea tree oil is now found in many over-the-counter treatments for skin irritations and cuts. Adding tea tree oil to a skin rash, small scrapes and even pimples, can help those areas heal.

Some essential oils work well to heal minor illnesses. Individuals who have problems with stuffy nose or congestion, may want to inhale peppermint oil may help to clear the nose and the sinuses. Essential oils are also very good for helping individuals relax, treating mild cases of depression and even for healing chronic headaches.

These are just a few common household uses for essential oils. Using essential oils in the above manners can help promote healing, relaxation while also providing a much safer way to cleanse and disinfect one’s bathroom, kitchen and other rooms in the house, without harsh or poisonous chemicals. Using essential oils is also less expensive and safer and then over-the-counter cleaners. The large amount of chemicals that are used to make these cleansers are believed to have long term health risks, including cancer.

Essential oils is the name given to more than 90 pure extracts from various plants. Despite the nomer ‘oil,’ essential oils are not, in fact petroleum products. They can be rubbed on the skin or used in aromatherapy. High quality essential oils are completely derived naturally and won’t clog pores. Because of their cleanliness, many essential oils can be used to help diminish acne.

Two of these oils are tea tree oil and emu oil. Emu oil, however, is not technically an essential oil, as it is derived from an animal. The emu is a mainly flightless bird originating mainly in Australia. The indigenous people of Australia, the Aborigines, use emu oil for its healing and restorative effects, particularly with regard to joint pain. Today, however, emu oil is used for a variety of purposes, one of those is to lessen the problem of acne.

Because emu oil is non-greasy and won’t clog pores, it makes a good skin moisturizer and softener. Lotion, no matter how ‘clean’ it is can still clog pores. Emu oil does the same job, but without the gunk that can cause acne.

Tea tree oil is another good choice for use on acne. This essential oil helps heal scars and won’t clog pores. Like other essential oils, tea tree oil can also be used for aromatherapy, soothing, even as it reduces acne. Common tea tree oil and New Zealand tea tree oil are the two common forms. The sent is balsamic and woody. The New Zealand variety has a warmer, earthier aroma.

Essential oils can be combined, and emu oil is an excellent carrier of essential oils, including tea tree oil. A combination of emu and tea tree oils can give softer, moisturized skin with a pleasant smell—all while reducing acne.

Grasses, trees and plants all contain powerful essential oils. Plant parts are distilled from all parts of the world. The distillation process results in a liquid which is used as an essential oil. When these oils are used for aromatherapy, alternative medicinal treatment is produced.

One of the most therapeutic essential oils is Chamomile. This oil has a very soothing effect for many of us who can become very nervous with day to day life. For an excellent night’s sleep, chamomile will help.

Tea Tree oil originated in Australia and is used to help the body combat pesky skin fungus and rashes. Tea Tree Oil helps relieve sunburn, bee stings or any other type of burn.

Lavender has a bit more uses than Tea Tree Oil. While being very aromatic, Lavender is also very therapeutic. For a deep relaxation, Lavender is often put in baths. Interestingly enough, Lavender is also an anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, and antibiotic. Tea Tree Oil is not the only essential oil used for burns. You can also use Lavender for burns, scrapes and cuts. It should never be poured on top of open wounds though.

Peppermint Oil has been found to be very aromatic. For pregnant women, it is used to treat morning sickness. There are few products available to help with nausea, but Peppermint is one of them. It can also be used in motion sickness.

Many people experience headaches and Eucalyptus is the essential oil for this problem. If you rub just a dab of this oil on the temples, the headache will disappear. This oil can also be held under the nose and directly inhaled for a faster result. During cold and flu season, it is wise to put this essential oil in a humidifier to aid in respiratory problems.

Citronella has many interesting uses. It can be used as an insect repellent as well as a treatment for head lice. You only need to mix this oil with water and spray on body, heads or carpets to treat lice and fleas. For a bug bite, rub a bit of Lavender on the bite or dab a little behind each ear to help deter bugs and insects.

Rose is helpful in the home. By putting a small drop in your washing machine or adding a couple drops to a dish cloth, you will help your house smell wonderful.

To help with physical and mental clarity, use can rub Rosemary on your skin. It helps with muscle aches and pains as well.

If you get athletes foot, jock itch or ringworm, try using Cinnamon as an antiviral. Make sure you buy Cinnamon oil, not Cassia.

To help with sleep, use Neroli oil. This oil helps induce sleep and relaxation.

None of these essential oils should ever be ingested. You should not use these oils on your skin without diluting them either. If essential oils are used correctly, they have many helpful issues. Also, these essential oils are very affordable. The cost is very much worth the price.

Going on a trip is usually thought of as a wonderful experience, one that you and your family may have planned and looked forward to for some time. To have the most fun – to get the most out of the experience – it’s important that you and your loved ones have the means to overcome those little ailments and discomforts that can make the experience range from mildly unpleasant to downright unbearable. How can we include a little ‘Trip Insurance’ to our already overstuffed carry-ons or mini-vans? Aromatherapy has an answer with some readily-available essential oils.

Motion sickness, bug bites, digestive difficulties, and general travel weariness – to name a few – are common discomforts experienced when venturing away from home. A small collection of inexpensive essential oils can provide great relief from these amusement-threatening ailments. ‘Treatment’ with these oils is simple – ranging from inhaling a little oil from a tissue, to adding to a bath, to drinking a drop with a warm cup of water. And, thankfully, relief often comes quickly because of the oils’ powerful properties and compatibility with our own bodies.

Peppermint and Ginger Essential Oils – Tummy Troubles and Clearing the Head

We’ll begin with ‘getting there’ – any trip starts with traveling. By car, boat, plane, or otherwise, motion sickness commonly effects many people, particularly children. This can easily make the ‘traveling’ portion of your experience absolutely no fun. Enter Peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint has long been used to calm uneasy stomachs, and is easily used. One drop (it is strong!) in a cup of warm water, sweetened if you like, can be sipped before and during the voyage. For the fussy ones, a drop can be added to a small amount of honey and taken from a spoon for the same effect.

Ginger essential oil is also known for it’s calming of upset stomachs – a little inhaled from a tissue or diluted in a carrier oil and rubbed on the abdomen can bring relief. One can also add a drop of ginger to warm water and drink as a strong tea – this may be effective for some food-related stomach issues as well, particularly when combined with the abdomen massage method.

Peppermint can also be uplifting to the weary driver or passenger – a drop or two placed on tissues in the car or near your seat will release the aroma into your surroundings. Be careful with this oil however, as getting it on sensitive areas of the skin (directly under the nose, and certainly near the eyes) can cause irritation. Tissues with the oil on it should not touch these areas directly.

Lavender Oil – the Great Soother

Lavender has been called ‘a medicine chest in a bottle’ due to its wide range of effects. The aroma of Lavender is uplifting and relaxing, useful for stress in congested airports or crowded highways. Breathing this very safe essential oil is effective for adults and children alike – inhaling drops from a tissue directly, or from one’s placed in your surroundings can help you and your companions be at ease.

Plus Thyme, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus – Cleansing and Keeping Bugs and Bites at Bay

Lavender essential oil is also an effective wound-healer because of it’s anti-inflammatory, mild antibacterial, and skin-regenerative actions. It can be used directly in case of burns, mixed 50:50 with Tea Tree and put on band aids to prevent infection, or blended with Thyme Linalol and Eucalyptus (2:4:2) and added to a bowl of water for an effective disinfectant wash.

Lavender is very useful for treating bites and stings – just place a little ‘neat’ (undiluted) on the affected area. This versatile oil is also a component of an insect repellent blend comprised of equal parts of Lavender, Thyme Linalol, and Peppermint, and a double-dose of Lemongrass essential oil. A drop or more placed on tissue or cloth about your room can keep the insects out of your space; 3 drops of this blend per teaspoon of carrier oil can be regularly applied to the skin – or you may mix a similar amount into any lotion you may have.

Lavender can be used in combination with Geranium, Chamomile, Peppermint and Eucalyptus oils in relieving the effects of jet-lag. Getting out of this weary state as quickly as possible makes any trip more enjoyable. This requires getting yourself and companions in-synch with local time, having good rest at night and perhaps a gentle lift in the mornings and throughout the day.

To get yourself into the swing of local time, relax and be ready for bed with equal parts of Lavender and Geranium essential oils – Chamomile may also be used in place of the Geranium, and works especially well for soothing children (if they are irritable for ANY reason). Add a few drops to a bath or use in a massage oil. For a morning eye-opener, do the same using equal amounts of Peppermint and Eucalyptus. You will find these useful at other times when you need a little clarity and lightening-up.

Lemon Oil – the Purifier

Lemon also has some wonderfully diverse uses. It is effective as an antibacterial, but not so strong as to be an irritant. Adding several drops per quart to your drinking water will help purify it, and the water can act as a disinfectant to be used in washing your fruits and vegetables – the need for this certainly depends on your location, but it not a bad idea whenever bacterial contamination may be a possibility. Further, regularly drinking water with added lemon oil can gently stimulate the lymphatic and digestive systems, helping alleviate that sluggish feeling that often accompanies extended plane and car travel.

Eucalyptus Oil – For Keeping Cool and Cold Relief

Eucalyptus – the Narrow Leaf variety is a favorite – has a great range of uses as well. It can cool the body when too hot, and protect it when too cold. It is found in almost all formulas used to relieve congestion, can support circulation, and bring lightness to a travel-weary head.

Eucalyptus oil can be used like peppermint to uplift and invigorate during long intervals in an automobile. It can be added to a cool bath or used on a cold compress in cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (accompanied by, of course, copious amounts of water and electrolytes!), and used in a similar manner to reduce fever.

Eucalyptus oil may be blended with Geranium as a massage oil (3 drops Eucalyptus and 2 drops Geranium per teaspoon of carrier oil) to relieve heat cramps. For congestion relief, to a drawn bath, add 1 drop Eucalyptus, 3 drops Lemon, 2 drops Thyme, and 2 drops Tea Tree – soak and breathe deeply – or simply add a few drops to a steaming bowl of water and inhale.

These are just a few examples of ways to make your travel experiences more enjoyable with aromatherapy. With a little effort, you can expand your knowledge of these oils, discovering further uses, and find other oils that work well for your particular needs.

These essential oils are readily available, and fairly inexpensive – though caution should be used when buying oils, as some can be adulterated, and others are mass-produced with techniques that may limit their therapeutic benefits. The more pleasant and ‘well rounded’ an oil’s aroma, generally the higher the quality. Your nose will know! And as with any aromatherapy application, start slowly – essential oils deserve a healthy respect.

One of the greatest healing gifts from the New Zealand plant world is, without question, the Manuka tree.

Manuka (botanically known as Leptospermum scoparium and sometimes known as ‘New Zealand Tea Tree’) is a highly medicinal plant with healing properties that were originally discovered and harnessed by the country’s indigenous Maori people, and later became of great importance to the country’s early European settlers.

Due to its concentrated potency, Manuka essential oil, which is extracted from Manuka leaves, is a wonderful alternative to the essential oil of Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). Some reports have even suggested that Manuka essential oil is 20 times more powerful than its Australian counterpart.

Whether it is 20 times more powerful or not, Manuka essential oil is wonderful for fungal skin infections (eg. athlete’s foot, ringworm and nail fungus) and has excellent antibacterial properties which make it useful for acne spot treatment or a wonderful natural first aid remedy to cuts and scrapes.

To help treat sinus problems, respiratory illnesses and allergies, the Maori people used to (and intact tribal communities quite possibly still do) boil fresh Manuka leaves in water then inhale the vapors. It was also typically used as a poultice – that is, freshly crushed Manuka leaves were wrapped around wounds or diseased skin to enhance healing and prevent infection. In addition, Manuka shoots were consumed to treat dysentary, and a warm, pain-relieving infusion made from the leaves and bark was massaged into rheumatic joints and aching muscles.

Whether these traditional remedies were highly effective is difficult to confirm, however modern science has positively validated the potent healing properties of Manuka, in particular the constituents of its essential oil.

In fact, scientific analysis of organic (or wild harvested) Manuka essential oil has shown up to 30% concentration of potent anti-microbial constituents, testing active against a broad range of micro-organisms that cause infections of the skin. Manuka essential oil has also tested 15 times stronger than Australian Tea Tree oil against Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains.

For at home applications, some common uses for Manuka Essential Oil are:

Fungal infections (ringworm, athlete’s foot) - 3-4 drops of undiluted Manuka essential oil to affected area twice daily, using cotton tip. Continue applying 1 week after symptoms clear.

Dandruff/itchy scalp - Mix in 5-8 drops of Manuka essential oil into normal amount of shampoo for 1 application. Apply to scalp and leave on 5 minutes before thoroughly rinsing.

Acne Spot Treatment - 2-3 drops of undiluted Manuka essential oil on a cotton tip. Apply to acne blemish twice daily.

Cuts/Abrasions - 4-5 drops of undiluted Manuka oil to affected area, using cotton tip. Reduces healing time and helps prevent infection.

Insect Bites/Stings - 3-4 drops undiluted Manuka oil on cotton tip. Apply to affected area to relieve itch and help reduce inflammation.

As with all essential oils, there are always some contraindications for Manuka. If in doubt, always consult with a certified aromatherapy professional. Manuka essential oil should be avoided in pregnancy and lacation due to its spasmolytic (muscle-relaxant) activity.

Essential oils are aromatic oils extracted from plants and have many therapeutic benefits. Essential oils are used to soothe the skin, heal cuts, eliminate pimples, help you relax, relieve digestive problems and even cure colds and flus.

For therapeutic purposes, only the most pure oils will do. Unfortunately there are many companies out there selling low quality oils and you should only buy from a source that you trust. Like with anything else, you get what you get what you pay for so if an oil seems to be priced quite cheaply, it’s probably not a good quality oil for medicinal purposes.

When using essential oils, it’s important to remember that these oils are strong and should not be applied directly to the skin. Mix them with base oils like almond or wheatgerm oil to reduce their potency.

Essential Oils And Their Uses

Lavender

Perhaps the most popular of the essential oils, lavender has many uses. It is a great topical treatment which can help heal cuts, bruises and burns and is also a wonder aid to help you relax and can be a natural sleep inducer.

Peppermint

Peppermint oil is great for treating digestive complaints and may be used in preparations for freshening breath.

Tea Tree and Eucalyptus

These oils have long been used to treat a variety of respiratory ailments. These oils can be massaged into the chest or used in an oil burner and help relive congestion making them excellent oils to use for colds. Tea tree oil is also a natural antiseptic and can be dabbed on cuts, bites and stings. It can be used to treat spots and pimples and can be used to gargle but should never be swallowed.

Geranium

Geranium oil has been used for years as a pain reliever.

Rosemary and Thyme

Not only do these herbs taste good but they have wonderful antiseptic properties and can be good for healing problems with the skin.

Citronella

Citronella oil is a natural insect repellent so it’s no wonder they use it in the manufacture of oils and sprays as well as candles to repel insects. To protect your pet against fleas, try soaking his collar in citronella oil. To help keep down insects in summer, buy some citronella Geraniums and put the around your porch or deck.

Garlic

Garlic is another natural insect repellent and is vital in helping to keep your immune system healthy. It can be a great way to help prevent colds and viruses naturally. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. And it tastes good too!

Patchouli

This fragrant oil smells great when used in an oil burner but it is also a great topical treatment for eczema and dandruff.

Ylang-ylang

This is another fragrant oil that can be burned for it’s aroma, and is also reputed to relieve stress, palpitations and high blood pressure.

Orange Oil

Use this oil as an aroma therapy, it is reputed to help with depression and nervous tension.

Cinnamon

This tasty herb is becoming popular for many treatments but it’s great when used as an aroma therapy. Mix it with orange oil and you’ll have a wonderful homey smell in your house. As a topical oil, it is excellent for warts and viral infections.

If you are really ambitious, you can grow these herbs yourself and collect the oil by stewing large amounts in pure water. Collect the steam and let it cool. The essential oils will rise to the top of the drained water and can be collected with an eyedropper. Or if you want a less labor intensive method, you can buy a product called a “flower still” which will help make the job easier.
