Going on a trip is usually thought of as a wonderful experience, one that you and your family may have planned and looked forward to for some time. To have the most fun – to get the most out of the experience – it’s important that you and your loved ones have the means to overcome those little ailments and discomforts that can make the experience range from mildly unpleasant to downright unbearable. How can we include a little ‘Trip Insurance’ to our already overstuffed carry-ons or mini-vans? Aromatherapy has an answer with some readily-available essential oils.

Motion sickness, bug bites, digestive difficulties, and general travel weariness – to name a few – are common discomforts experienced when venturing away from home. A small collection of inexpensive essential oils can provide great relief from these amusement-threatening ailments. ‘Treatment’ with these oils is simple – ranging from inhaling a little oil from a tissue, to adding to a bath, to drinking a drop with a warm cup of water. And, thankfully, relief often comes quickly because of the oils’ powerful properties and compatibility with our own bodies.

Peppermint and Ginger Essential Oils – Tummy Troubles and Clearing the Head

We’ll begin with ‘getting there’ – any trip starts with traveling. By car, boat, plane, or otherwise, motion sickness commonly effects many people, particularly children. This can easily make the ‘traveling’ portion of your experience absolutely no fun. Enter Peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint has long been used to calm uneasy stomachs, and is easily used. One drop (it is strong!) in a cup of warm water, sweetened if you like, can be sipped before and during the voyage. For the fussy ones, a drop can be added to a small amount of honey and taken from a spoon for the same effect.

Ginger essential oil is also known for it’s calming of upset stomachs – a little inhaled from a tissue or diluted in a carrier oil and rubbed on the abdomen can bring relief. One can also add a drop of ginger to warm water and drink as a strong tea – this may be effective for some food-related stomach issues as well, particularly when combined with the abdomen massage method.

Peppermint can also be uplifting to the weary driver or passenger – a drop or two placed on tissues in the car or near your seat will release the aroma into your surroundings. Be careful with this oil however, as getting it on sensitive areas of the skin (directly under the nose, and certainly near the eyes) can cause irritation. Tissues with the oil on it should not touch these areas directly.

Lavender Oil – the Great Soother

Lavender has been called ‘a medicine chest in a bottle’ due to its wide range of effects. The aroma of Lavender is uplifting and relaxing, useful for stress in congested airports or crowded highways. Breathing this very safe essential oil is effective for adults and children alike – inhaling drops from a tissue directly, or from one’s placed in your surroundings can help you and your companions be at ease.

Plus Thyme, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus – Cleansing and Keeping Bugs and Bites at Bay

Lavender essential oil is also an effective wound-healer because of it’s anti-inflammatory, mild antibacterial, and skin-regenerative actions. It can be used directly in case of burns, mixed 50:50 with Tea Tree and put on band aids to prevent infection, or blended with Thyme Linalol and Eucalyptus (2:4:2) and added to a bowl of water for an effective disinfectant wash.

Lavender is very useful for treating bites and stings – just place a little ‘neat’ (undiluted) on the affected area. This versatile oil is also a component of an insect repellent blend comprised of equal parts of Lavender, Thyme Linalol, and Peppermint, and a double-dose of Lemongrass essential oil. A drop or more placed on tissue or cloth about your room can keep the insects out of your space; 3 drops of this blend per teaspoon of carrier oil can be regularly applied to the skin – or you may mix a similar amount into any lotion you may have.

Lavender can be used in combination with Geranium, Chamomile, Peppermint and Eucalyptus oils in relieving the effects of jet-lag. Getting out of this weary state as quickly as possible makes any trip more enjoyable. This requires getting yourself and companions in-synch with local time, having good rest at night and perhaps a gentle lift in the mornings and throughout the day.

To get yourself into the swing of local time, relax and be ready for bed with equal parts of Lavender and Geranium essential oils – Chamomile may also be used in place of the Geranium, and works especially well for soothing children (if they are irritable for ANY reason). Add a few drops to a bath or use in a massage oil. For a morning eye-opener, do the same using equal amounts of Peppermint and Eucalyptus. You will find these useful at other times when you need a little clarity and lightening-up.

Lemon Oil – the Purifier

Lemon also has some wonderfully diverse uses. It is effective as an antibacterial, but not so strong as to be an irritant. Adding several drops per quart to your drinking water will help purify it, and the water can act as a disinfectant to be used in washing your fruits and vegetables – the need for this certainly depends on your location, but it not a bad idea whenever bacterial contamination may be a possibility. Further, regularly drinking water with added lemon oil can gently stimulate the lymphatic and digestive systems, helping alleviate that sluggish feeling that often accompanies extended plane and car travel.

Eucalyptus Oil – For Keeping Cool and Cold Relief

Eucalyptus – the Narrow Leaf variety is a favorite – has a great range of uses as well. It can cool the body when too hot, and protect it when too cold. It is found in almost all formulas used to relieve congestion, can support circulation, and bring lightness to a travel-weary head.

Eucalyptus oil can be used like peppermint to uplift and invigorate during long intervals in an automobile. It can be added to a cool bath or used on a cold compress in cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (accompanied by, of course, copious amounts of water and electrolytes!), and used in a similar manner to reduce fever.

Eucalyptus oil may be blended with Geranium as a massage oil (3 drops Eucalyptus and 2 drops Geranium per teaspoon of carrier oil) to relieve heat cramps. For congestion relief, to a drawn bath, add 1 drop Eucalyptus, 3 drops Lemon, 2 drops Thyme, and 2 drops Tea Tree – soak and breathe deeply – or simply add a few drops to a steaming bowl of water and inhale.

These are just a few examples of ways to make your travel experiences more enjoyable with aromatherapy. With a little effort, you can expand your knowledge of these oils, discovering further uses, and find other oils that work well for your particular needs.

These essential oils are readily available, and fairly inexpensive – though caution should be used when buying oils, as some can be adulterated, and others are mass-produced with techniques that may limit their therapeutic benefits. The more pleasant and ‘well rounded’ an oil’s aroma, generally the higher the quality. Your nose will know! And as with any aromatherapy application, start slowly – essential oils deserve a healthy respect.

Aromatherapy is a traditionally used concept used for beauty, calming senses, meditation, health care and healing. It involves use of herbs, infused oil, floral waters, carrier oils and other natural substances. The aromatherapy oils are derived from leaves, flowers, barks, berries and leaves. Organic aromatherapy means the essential oils used for aromatherapy are grown organically. These oils are often sold full strength but may also be sold diluted. Diluted oils mean that only a percentage of the oil is of the desired extract and the remainder is carrier oil such as almond or avocado. Organic plants are grown without the treatment of pesticides.

Many organic farmers believe that pesticides not only harm the earth, but they are not healthy to ingest either. Organic farms are checked every few years to test for chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other types of artificial substances. Organic aromatherapy oil is the best choice if you want your mind and body to be treated using the purest forms of nature. Organic aromatherapy oil comes from essential oils that originate from plants that have not been treated by any chemicals. Organic aromatherapy offers a unique purity which will smell and work better for many people than the non organic varieties.

One of the principles of aromatherapy is using natural methods rather than synthetic. Using lavender for organic aromatherapy is a good place to start; lavender is a light delicate scent that has many therapeutic purposes. A few drops of the organic essential oil can be placed in an ounce of almond oil to produce relaxing massage oil. The organic aromatherapy essential oil can also be placed on a cotton cloth to scent the bedding after washing. Simply place 3-4 drops of the pure essential oil onto a plain cotton cloth, after the load of laundry is dried add the scented cloth and tumble with the heat off for an additional 10-15 minutes.

Organic aromatherapy lemon vital oil can be placed in water to have a strong home grip cleaner. Adding tea tree oil to the lemon cleaner will translate the cleaner into a mild but strong disinfectant. Lemon vital oil for healthful aromatherapy can too be added to honey to have drinking warm tea still more pleasant. Breathing in the herbal aroma of the tea combined with the stimulating aroma of lemon can have for a really pleasant dawn goody. Organic aromatherapy is a humor and intriguing manner to change ones climate or merely love a favourite aroma. The excellent character of healthful oils offer the ended merchandise unsurpassed character

Aromatherapy is a form of science that has been around for centuries. Like its name suggests, aromatherapy is a form of treatment that uses scents. In aromatherapy, essential oils are used to relax and energize a person. It is very effective in alleviating psychological problems you have, has very good cosmetic uses and is basically very helpful in reducing stress in a person.

These oils are availed from the living parts of plants and trees. This is why it is possible to be used safely and beneficially at home. In fact, you will in fact enjoy yourself more if you use oils for aromatherapy in your own home. However there are some points that you have to keep in mind when practicing aromatherapy on your own, in your house.

It is very important that you dilute essential oils before using them. They should not be applied directly on your body without any dilution. The only oils that can be used without any dilution are lavender and tea tree oil. You have to be very careful when using essential oils, especially around flames and heat sources. This is because these volatiel oils are flammable. So if you use burners to diffuse the oil, it is better to use the burner after putting water in the burner. This way, the essential oil enters the air when the water evaporates.

Usually, essential oils are used only externally. However, sometimes, an aroma therapist may advise oils to be taken by mouth. The reasons essential oils should not be taken internally is that some oils are toxic when swallowed. Sometimes essential oils are diluted and used as some form of oral treatment like mouthwash. In such cases, it should not be swallowed.

Make sure that you place the oils in a safe place, beyond the reach of children. It’s important that you consult the aroma therapist, if you intend to use these essential oils when pregnant, on your babies and young children. If you intend to use these oils not only as a form of aromatherapy, but also as part of homeopathic or herbal medicine treatment, then you should seek advice from both homeopathic and herbal medicine doctors and the aroma therapist.

Aromatherapy does not cure all medical conditions; that’s why the doctor should be consulted before using aromatherapy as a treatment for a medical condition. Once all these points are kept in mind, and followed, you will find your aromatherapy treatment to be both beneficial and enjoyable.

Aromatherapy oils are known as essential oils form the base of aromatherapy and influence the mind, body and spirit. These oils are the concentrated extracts of plants and their roots, stems, flowers and fruits. Essential oils are extracted from the plants usually by the means of distillation.

Essential oils are concentrated and must be diluted by mixing up with carrier oils such sweet almond, apricot kernel, grape seed and jojoba, before application. Only a few pure essential oils like lavender and tea tree can be applied directly to the skin.

Massaging the oil onto the body is the most common method of getting the benefit of aromatherapy oils, since skin is the largest absorption organ that you have.

Presenting the list of commonly used essential oils –

Bergamot – Originally from Italy, it is obtained from the rind of the bitter orange. It is pale green in colour, with sharp, orangey and refreshing fragrance.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to treat medical conditions, to alleviate psychological ailments, for cosmetic purposes, and to reduce stress. The essential oils of aromatherapy have the power to enhance both your physical and mental state.

Essential oils are extracted from living plants and trees. When essential oils are used appropriately, most can be used at home safely, enjoyably, and with beneficial effects. Keep the following seven things in mind if you want to try aromatherapy at home.

(1) Most essential oils should never be applied directly without diluting them. Only lavender and tea tree oil are exceptions to this rule.

(2) Essential oils are flammable, so use extreme caution around flames and heat sources. If you use a burner to diffuse the oil, put water in the burner first. The essential oil will enter the air as the water evaporates.

(3) Essential oils are for external use only. On very rare occasions, a qualified aromatherapist may prescribe essential oils by mouth. Some essential oils can be very toxic if swallowed. Even essential oils that have a therapeutic effect when diluted in certain oral treatments (like mouthwash) should not be swallowed.

(4) Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children.

(5) If you want to use essential oils during pregnancy, on babies, or with young children, please seek the advice of a trained, qualified aromatherapist first.

(6) If you are using essential oils as part of homeopathic or herbal medicine treatment, get advice from homeopathic or herbal medicine practitioners as well as from an aromatherapist.

(7) Some medical conditions require a doctor’s care, and not all medical conditions benefit from aromatherapy. Always check with your doctor first before undertaking aromatherapy for the treatment of any medical condition.

Following these seven principles for safe aromatherapy will help your experience with aromatherapy to be both enjoyable and beneficial.

Everyone knows how great it feels to get a good massage. With the help of a massage, you can alleviate sore and tired muscles while also releasing stress. In order to increase the benefits of a massage, however, you might want to include aromatherapy massage oil in your massage sessions.

What is Aromatherapy Massage Oil?

Aromatherapy massage oil is a special type of massage oil that contains aromatherapy essential oils. Since it is a massage oil, it contains special oils that make it slippery and easy to glide over the skin. This way, friction is reduced and a more soothing and relaxing massage can be enjoyed. In addition to containing oil, however, it also contains aromatherapy essential oils.

Aromatherapy essential oils are oils that have been extracted from plants. By extracting the oils through a distillation process, aromatherapy essential oils are able to maintain the beneficial properties of the plant from which they are derived.

How Does Aromatherapy Works?

To understand how does aromatherapy works, it is important to first gain a better understating of essential oils. Since aromatherapy essential oils are a concentrated version of the plants they are derived from, it takes very little of the oil to receive the benefits the plant provides. Therefore, aromatherapy massage oil typically only contains a few drops of essential oils. Yet, these oils are potent enough to provide benefits to the recipient.

With aromatherapy, the essential oils are inhaled. As a result, the scent of the essential oils has an effect on the brain, particularly on the limbic system. Depending upon the plant used, the aroma of the plant as well as its healing properties has a different effect on the body. Aromatherapy essential oils are even more potent when used along with massage, as the combination helps to further relax the body and to surround the olfactory system with the scent of the oils.

Some of the benefits of aromatherapy essential oils and the plants that provide these benefits include:

Antibacterial – cinnamon, clove, lime, rosemary and tea tree oil
Anti-inflammatory – bay leaf, black cumin, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus and sage
Antifungal – clove, juniper, lavender, tea tree oil and thyme
Antiviral – ginger, hyssop, lemongrass, peppermint, sandlewood, tea tree oil, thyme

Aromatherapy essential oils can also be used to change a person’s mood, such as using peppermint to energize the body or chamomile to help the body relax.

A look at how does aromatherapy works and how to include aromatherapy essential oils in an aromatherapy massage oil in order to improve the effects of the massage.

Most mainstream toothpastes contain several different ingredients or additives that some consider cancer risks. These include saccharin, FD&C Blue #1, and fluoride.

Other ingredients found in many commercial toothpastes include sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol and sorbitol – and poison ingestion warning labels.

Although fluoride may have some benefits in prevention of tooth decay, it is also thought to cause a rare form of bone cancer in experimental studies, according to the federal National Toxicology Program. And it accumulates with age.

However, commercial toothpaste does have an appeal that the public can’t deny. And some natural health product manufacturers have even created alternatives that include baking soda and clays. Since homeopathic remedies are negated by substances such as mint and tea tree oil, some tooth oil products are made with non-offending oils like anise and lemon.

Not coincidentally essential oils (especially organic ones) have certain electrical frequencies like all living things and can generate either a high or low frequency depending on the quality of the raw materials to make them and the presence of additives like pesticides, and high heat.

Essential oils can be absorbed by the body when applied topically. Inhalation of the aromatic vapors also provides benefits. Some oils can also be ingested. Essential oils resonate at a very high frequency (the measurable rate of electric energy flow between two points). Research has shown that healthful substances such as fresh produce and herbs resonate at higher frequencies than canned or processed foods.

In fact, a healthy person’s body resonates at a higher frequency than a body suffering from disease. Essential oils resonate at the highest frequency of any natural substance.

The best ways to use essential oils are external applications and as inhalations. Essential oils are readily absorbed by the tissues of the body delivering nourishment directly to the parts of the body that need it most.

Perhaps the greatest benefit from using essential oil products is the effect the scent can have on the mind itself; relaxing, rejuvenating, calming, or stimulating, depending on the oil or oils. The study of aromatherapy is based on the use of oils and their fragrances.

Sometimes aromatherapy gifts can be a very good choice for relatives, although often they don’t give the impression that all that much thought went in to picking out the present.

The reason that aromatherapy gifts can so powerfully affect your moods has to do with the way that the brain is structured. More than any other sense, the sense of smell is wired directly into the brain, and bypasses the part of the brain that weakens sensations, or filters out impulses and feelings which aren’t that important.

This is why a particular odor can trigger such a powerful cascade of memories. aromatherapy gifts take advantage of this, using odors to change your moods, not just by making them better, but by exciting, relaxing, or otherwise altering your consciousness. aromatherapy gifts can be used as part of a meditation practice too.

When, every day at a certain hour, you smell the same aromatherapy gift oil, you will know that it is time to release the cares of the day and relax deeply into your practice. This is why aromatherapy gifts are often good gifts to give yourself, as well as others. And aromatherapy gifts come in all kinds of different types, from candles, to oils, to incense sticks, allowing a wide variety of uses and decorative functions.

The word Aromatherapy is derived from the Greek words for spice and treatment. These days, aroma has a more general meaning of fragrance so aromatherapy quite literally means therapeutic treatment with the use of scents.

Out of all the five senses, the sense of smell is said to have the most direct effect on our emotional well being. There are also many psychological and physiological benefits associated with fragrances. The scents of various essential oils can promote relaxation, alleviate depression, reduce stress and even encourage healthy sleep habits.

If you are looking for the right oil to bring just the right fragrance to your home, or if you are searching for an essential oil to add to your personal fragrance collection, these aromatherapy essential oils will help lift your spirits and relax your mind.

If you want to get a good night sleep, or are looking to relax after a long day at work, you may want to try dropping a teaspoon or two of lavender into your bathwater in the evening. You can also mix lavender oil with rosewater for a fresh, calming scent that you can use on your body and linens. Lavender is also used in many natural facial and skin cleansers for its antibiotic properties, and the soothing scent will help you sleep peacefully throughout the night. To heighten the effect, you may also want to sip a cup of chamomile tea after your lavender bath to relax the muscles and calm the nervous system.

If you are looking to invigorate yourself in the morning, the fresh scent of bergamot or orange oil is sure to wake you up and improve your mood. The fruity, citrus scent of these aromatherapy essential oils will increase the blood flow in the body, and will help you to shake off sleep in a matter of minutes. You can use the oil in the shower, and can even mix it with your favourite shampoo or conditioner so that you can carry the scent with you all day.

If you want to make sure that you are alert and able to concentrate throughout the day, body washes and soaps made from peppermint essential oil will definitely do the trick. Peppermint is also used in tea form to help clear the digestive track, and can improve brain function almost immediately.

If you are using aromatherapy essential oils for healing purposes, ginger oil will help. Ginger is known for helping the body to get rid of toxic mucous, and the oil from the ginger root will help with mental fogginess or depression that sometimes occurs when we are not feeling well. Eucalyptus oil is also used for people with severe sinus pressure and allergies, and can be used in a humidifier to purify the air and open up the airways. Tea tree oil can be used to help clear up colds and infections in the body, and has even been used as an effective acne treatment.

Aromatherapy is one of the popular alternative therapies used in treating number of health problems. Aromatherapy oils are natural plant oils and because of their gentle way of healing, they can be used in many different ways. You can choose to use them in your bath, for massage or in preparing a number of home remedies. Below are few home remedies for common health problems.

Aromatherapy oils in various home remedies –

1. For cellulite – Make a blend a four drops of juniper, four drops of fennel and four drops of lemon oils in 4 fl oz (100 ml) of a carrier oil. Massage this into the cellulite affected areas daily after your bath, when the skin is warm and receptive.

2. For sunstroke – Add four drops of juniper, four drops of fennel and four drops of peppermint oil to a cool bath. Soak for 15 minutes. Then, rub a little neat lavender oil into your temples at regular intervals. The bath will help to reduce your temperature and the lavender oil helps your headache.

3. Dry or cracked lips – Make up a carrier oil of 2 fl oz (50 ml) apricot kernel oil and 2 fl oz (50 ml) of avocado oil. Add six drops of sandalwood and six drops of rose oil. Rub this to the lips, repeating the application regularly.

4. For sunburn – f the sunburned area is small, apply the lavender oil and repeat as necessary. If the area is large, add twenty drops of lavender oil to a cool bath and soak for 10-20 minutes. You can make a soothing spray by adding 10 drops of lavender oil to 1 pint (300 ml) of cool, clean water.

5. Small cuts – Apply lavender or tea tree oil to the cut. These are both antiseptic and don’t sting.
