It is produced by steam distillation of the leaves of the plant – Melaleuca alternifolia, more commonly known as the Australian tea tree. As the name suggests, the trees are native to Australia and have been used for thousands of years by the aboriginals in Australia for healing wounds, cuts, abrasions, burns and infections by applying the crushed leaves to the affected areas.

These days the tea tree oil is being used as an antiseptic to treat burns, cuts, insect bites etc. It has anti-inflammatory properties and hence can be used as a topical application to give relief in conditions like arthritis, eczema, bursitis and gout.It can also give relief from pain because of its analgesic property. The oil is also anti-fungal. In some hospitals in Australia, it has been used before surgery to boost the affected immune system and in a London hospital, a study has been done and it was shown that the Tea Tree Oil can be an alternative to Vancomysin in countering the super bug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Tea tree oil when inhaled makes breathing easier by acting as a decongestant. It can alleviate symptoms of sore throat and decrease the symptoms of cold and flu.

SKIN

The Tea tree oil has many uses for the skin. Its proven antifungal properties can be used to treat candidacies, ringworm, athlete’s foot and thrush. It can also be used to treat dandruff because it fights Malassezia furfur, which is most common cause for this affliction. Fungal nail infections can be cured by application of a formulation containing tea tree oil twice daily and relief can be typically seen in 3-4 months.

As a strong anti-viral agent, Tea Tree is effective in fighting many common
infectious diseases such as cold, shingles, measles, flu and chicken pox.

Tea tree oil is effective in treating boils, insect bites, minor wounds, soothe inflammation caused by sunburn poison ivy and bee stings.

The essential oil is also known to prevent foul body odor and soothe burning feet. It reduces scarring caused by hypertrophy. When massaged, tea tree oil may alleviate the discomfort of joint injuries and sore muscles.

It can also be used in the treatment of acne. When topically applied, a 5% solution of tea tree oil has been proved as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide though it had a slower onset of action.

The oil can be used effectively for treating nappy/Diaper rash in babies which is cause.

Research has also shown that tea tree oil may have topical anti-viral property, with the Herpes virus, chicken pox, cold sores, warts, and shingles blisters, etc.

A word of caution; though tea tree oil is safe to use, it should not be used undiluted as in case of all essential oils. Undiluted Tea Tree Oil can cause irritation, itchiness, and redness on sensitive skin. Therefore, in case of people with sensitive skin, it is prudent to dilute the tea tree oil in another base oil like olive oil or even sunflower oil.

Tea tree oil acne and boils treatment is becomming more and more common and worth exploring.

A boil is an inflamed area, usually based in a hair follicle, and can be caused by a physical condition such as acne, or severe dermatitis and can also result from low immunity, irritations, an illness, stress, food allergy, poor diet, shaving, plucking hairs or poor hygiene. A boil usually starts as a tender area, becoming hard and swelling, and eventually softening and forming a head. The head is filled with bacteria and the white blood cells fighting the infection (pus). Staphylococcus is the bacteria that is usually found in the pus of a boil.

The bacteria involved are those usually present on healthy skin, so the boil is an indication of low resistance to infection. It is advised not to lance the boil, because bacteria can spread to nearby skin and create new boils. Apply hot packs for up to 20 minutes at a time, throughout the day, as the heat draws more white blood cells, thereby helping to fight the infection. Do not cover with a bandaid. Wash with tea tree oil soap and apply antiseptic cream containing tea tree oil. A drop or two of tea tree oil may also be applied directly to the boil. Dab it on with a piece of clean cotton, do not rub or otherwise irritate the boil.

Procedure to be followed periodically throughout the day:

Dab some tea tree oil onto the boil with a piece of cotton to help bring it to a head, then cover with a piece of gauze. Cover the gauze with a damp washcloth, followed by a dry towel and then apply a heating pad. Leave on a low temperature for about 15 minutes. Change your dressing and reapply the tea tree oil. The oil helps bring the boil to a head while the warm compress helps pull the infection out of the skin; the tea tree oil then acts as an antiseptic and antibiotic on the bacteria in the pus. Be sure to throw away the gauze each time, and wash your hands with tea tree oil soap each time you handle the gauze or touch the boil.

Sometimes a boil’s bacteria can spread to a lymph node that is nearby. If there is a boil on the neck, check the lymph glands for swelling and tenderness. You should visit a doctor if this occurs, also if there is fever or lethargy. It’s important to learn to listen to your body and recognize when tea tree oil acne and boils treatment will be enough, and when you need the help of a doctor.

Botanical Name: Melaleuca alternifolia

Don’t leave home without this powerful essential oil that is a healer and anti-biotic. This oil has few rivals, bolsters morale and resistance. Colds, flu, bronchitis, sinusitis, candida, bacterial and fungal infections and weak immune systems.

As a natural antiseptic, Tea Tree’s anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties make this a very versatile oil. Tea Tree acts as an immune booster for the body in the defense of these threats (bacteria, viruses or fungi). It is one of the few oils that can be used directly on the skin without the aid of a carrier oil. As always, less is more when it comes to Essential Oils; if you are using it directly on the skin, apply only one drop.

Great in first aid kits; Tea Tree Oil can be used for bug bites, acne, boils, athlete’s foot (try when combining with Lemongrass Oil) and herpes blisters. The oil may assist in the reproduction of white blood cells, thereby making it helpful when dealing with colds, influenza, coughs and sore throats. As well, the oil has been said to combat yeast infections (try adding a couple of drops to a warm sitz bath) and candida.

Aromatherapy Recipes

Bugs Away Summer Spray

45 ml Distilled Water
15 ml Witch Hazel
5 drops Tea Tree Oil
5 drops Citronella Oil

Combine all ingredients into a mister bottle. Shake before using!

Immune Booster

10 ml Grapeseed Oil or Sweet Almond Oil
5 drops Tea Tree Oil
5 drops Eucalyptus Radiata Oil
3 drops Peppermint Oil
1 drops Cinnamon Leaf Oil

Count individual drops of all essential oils into 10ml of unscented base oil of your choice. Massage into chest, throat, back or even the soles of your feet …great immune stimulant when you are feeling run down and fighting off a bug.

Suggested Uses

Try using a couple of drops of Tea Tree Oil in the water that is used to clean pet food dishes, carriers, litter boxes, cages and bedding.

Try adding 3-5 drops to a foot soak to soothe aching feet and to add to your treatment of Athlete’s Foot.

Keep a bottle in your camping first aid kit and use one drop on cuts, scrapes, abrasions and bug bites.

A couple of drops in a diaper pail will act as both a sanitizer and deodorizer.

One drop in the palm of your hands, rub hands together, cup palms together…inhale deeply; or 2-3 drops in a bath. Great for boosting your immune system.

Blends well with Eucalyptus, Geranium, Peppermint, Lemon, Lavender, Rosemary, Cinnamon, Clove or Pine

Tea tree oil is an essential oil known for its medicinal properties. Native to the New South Wales, Australia steam distillation of the leaves of the tree Melaleuca alternifolia helps obtain tea tree oil. Among the 100 compounds contained in the oil terpinen-4-ol mainly accounts for most of the antimicrobial actions.

Tea tree oil is a clear to very yellow or green-tinged essential oil with a fresh camphoraceous odor. These leaves were earlier used as a substitute for tea, which is how the oil got its name.

One should not confuse Tea tree oil and Tea Oil (the seasoning and cooking oil obtained from pressed seeds of the plant Camellia oleifera).

Tea Tree oil was used in Australia as a potent antiseptic much before any scientific research. Tea Tree crushed leaves were used as traditional medicine by inhaling the oils treating cold and cough and also sprinkling them on wounds.

It was only after 1920’s use of oil itself become popular. A series of research papers evaluating antimicrobial properties published by Arthur Penfold led to the popularity. The oil was extracted using mobile, makeshift, wood-fired bush still and plant material was hand cut on the spot. The demand was very high till World War II and ebbed after the war mainly due to development of effective antibiotics and interest in natural products. However, the interest in natural essential oils was rekindled in 1970s and 1980s and its demand has surged for uses in medicinal and cosmetic uses. Further studies in the recent time support the use of tea tree oil in skin care and various aliments.

Here are glimpses of the uses of this wondrous oil:

•Tea Tree Oil Acne: A study done in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Department of Dermatology proved Tea Tree oil as very effective in treatment of moderate acne.

•Inhaled tea tree oil helps breathing easier by “breaking up congestion”. It can also minimize the symptoms of flu, cold, sore throat and systemic fungal infection.

•Dandruff: Tea tree shampoo helped significantly reduce dandruff symptoms after 4 weeks of use. This was reveled in a study done on 126 people with mild to moderate dandruff. This is due to its ability to treat Malassezia furfur, the general common cause of the dandruff.

•Athlete’s Foot: A study to cure athlete’s foot was done and 50% tea tree oil solution and placebo was used. After two daily applications for 4 weeks, tea tree oil was found to be significantly more effective than placebo.

•Toenails and Fungal Infection: Another study found that 100% tea tree oil was as effective on toenail fungus infection as was the standard antifungal medication of 1% clotrimazole solution.

•Tea tree oil is also effective against candidiasis and other vaginal infections.

•It can also be used as a bath additive and also may control bacteria in spas and pools.

• Tea Tree oil is also used in cosmetic products to make tea tree soap and shampoo.

•It has also been used in treatments for eye aliment and blepharitis.

•It is also used in toothpastes, mouth washes for curing bad breath and gum diseases.

•It is also effective in treating minor wounds, insect bites soothe sunburn and ear infection.

•Tea Tree oil diluted solution is also sold as to cure fungal and bacterial infection for pet fish.

These are just the few of its uses and the list surely goes on. Tea tree oil is a amazing gift from mother nature which we can put to a plethora of uses.

One of important use of the tea tree oil medicinal properties is the shampoos containing it to help fight dandruff and other scalp problems. Most of the major suppliers of hair care product are now offering shampoos containing the it, as the demand for organic and natural products has gone up.

Tea tree oil is an essential oil known for its medicinal properties. It is obtained after steam distillation of the tree Melaleuca alternifolia which is a native of New South Wales, Australia. It is antiseptic and antifungal in nature. Among the various 98 components in it, the most important is terpinen-4-ol , which accounts for most of antimicrobial properties of this oil. This is also major component as it between 30%-48% as per ISO standards.

The tea tree oil should not be confused with tea oil (the seasoning and cooking oil obtained from pressed seeds of the plant Camellia oleifera).

The tea tree shampoo can help to cleanse hair and scalp , it soothes a itchy dry scalp and control dandruff. It is an good antifungal agent due to effective in vitro against multiple dermatophytes. It is due to ability of shampoo containing 5% tea tree to treat Malassezia furfur, the common cause for these symptoms.

According to a study reported in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology a study conducted on 126 persons using a shampoo containing 5% tea tree oil with mild to moderate dandruff found reduced symptoms after a 4 week trial. The author of this study believes that it helps kill the specific fungus involved in dandruff. The participants were asked to rate degree of itchiness, scaliness and greasiness of their scalps. They reported significant reduction in all these factors as compared to other group using placebo shampoo. No side effects were also reported in this study.

Dandruff is characterized by dryness, itchiness and flakiness of the scalp. Some studies suggest that it is a specific fungus called Pityrosporum ovale and some cases can be treated by antifungal medication like, ketoconazole, terbinafine and selenium sulfide. However the oil is beneficial for dandruff as it is an effective anti fungal agent.

The shampoo containing it can be used everyday without causing any imbalance in natural bacteria. It can be used by both sexes and all kind of hair whether natural or colored.

One can also add 2% tea tree oil in any natural shampoo (i.e. 2 cc in 98 cc of shampoo). This will help keep scalp bacteria free and avoid fungal problems. For dry hair 2% solution of tree oil in a moisturizing shampoo will help.

The Benefits of using shampoo containing it are:

• It stops dry, flaky and itch scalp condition.
• Clean beautiful hair
• Prevents and control dandruff.
• Minimise oil production and promotes healthy circulation.
• It is organic and contains no animal products or harmful chemicals.

Uses of Tea tree oil for Kids’ Shampoo

Kids often suffer from a problem of head lice. Using a shampoo containing pesticide is not a solution. What parents don’t realize while using these harsh chemicals is the health hazards of using them on children. Nit picking can be complicated sensory issue, it can also effect child’s behavior. Adding few drops of tea tree oil to child’s shampoo can help immensely. There are also shampoos available with tea tree oil for kids.

You will also find shampoos with it are also available for pets. It helps pets by to soothing dry skin, get relief from itching and in reducing dandruff flakes. It also helps to calm raw or sore skin due to flea and other skin problem.

So don’t wait and try out a wondrous shampoo containing tea tree oil.

All essential oils should be used safely in order to treat various conditions and promote inner peace and relaxation. However, all essential oils are not safe. In fact, some of them can negatively interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications. They can either dull or increase their power. This is why it is imperative to perform your due diligence, which may include speaking with a trained aromotherapist, before you begin using essential oils. The essential oils that are generally considered as safe are lavender and tea tree oil.

Lavender essential oil is created by extracting the oil from the lavender plant. It is used for both medicinal and enjoyment purposes. Studies have shown that lavender oil is effective in treating alopecia, stress, insomnia and even acts as an anti-bacterial agent. It can effectively be used with massage and acupuncture. Lavender is believed to be able to improve sleep, help individuals relax and lighten one’s mood by slowing down the nervous system. In Germany, lavender tea is given to people who suffer from the inability to sleep. Lavender oil is also believed to be able to help individuals that suffer from headaches, acne, fungal infections and eczema.

Tea tree oil is the other essential oil that is safe to use. You are likely to find lot of products that are infused with tea tree oil at your local beauty supply store or even Wal-mart.

There are some precautions that should be taken. Some studies have found that tea tree oil may affect hormones and may cause the breast tissue in boys to enlarge. Consequently, you may not want to allow your teen son to use it. Tea tree oil is generally safe for external use, but should never be taken internally.

However, tea tree oil does have some very good uses. It can be used to help in the healing of burns, cuts and skin infections. Other common uses include the treatment of acne, dandruff, eczema, boils, psoriasis, thrush, dandruff and athletes foot.

Tea tree oil and lavender oil are two of the most safe essential oils available. They are generally considered safe by the traditional and alternative health communities. If you have any questions about any intended uses for either of these essential oils, it is recommended that you speak with an aromatherapist who can provide you with the proper guidance.
