We have all heard of the famous British explorer captain Cook. In 1770 captain Cook landed Botany Bay near the site that eventually would become known as Sydney, Australia. During this period of discovery he came across the “Healing ground” area which was named by the aborigines, it was an area filled with trees. Cook observed the aborigines as they applied crushed leaves, gathered from these trees, to open wounds. They also brewed tea from those same leaves which Cook found spicy and refreshing and it was he who gave the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree its common name “The tea tree”.

Captain Cook and his crew would later on take samples of the tea tree back to England for further study but nothing ever became of those studies and as a result the medical properties of the Melaleuca Alternifolia remained undiscovered to those outside of Australia.

Dr Dennis Considen, who was a surgeon recognized the medical properties of the tea tree but due to lack of training and equipment the powerful potential of the oil remained dormant for the next 150 years. In 1923 Dr.A. Penfold, an Australian chemist studied the tea tree oil in depth after distilling it and found that it had significant antiseptic as well as bactericidal properties. He presented his findings in 1925 to the Royal Society of new South Wales and England, you can find the first medical reference to the qualities of tea tree oil in the medical journal of Australia 1930.

When World War 2 broke out the melaleuca oil was an essential part of every Australian first aid kit as they fully recognized the many medical qualities that lie within it.

Later on, in 1960 further studies were conducted in an attempt to rediscover and recertify the effects of the tea tree oil and so it begun, the tea tree and its oil became the hit of the century and as a result the Australian government had to set some standards for development of acceptable quality oil which included a concentration of at least 35% terpinen 4-ol & no more than 10 % cineole.

Eventually the old standards would change slightly to accommodate room for further proliferation and in the current day, melaleuca oil is recognized & sold world wide. It has undergone extensive research and has proven its multiple medical benefits, a good quality oil today would have at least 35% terpinen 4-ol & no more than 10% cineole which is the 1967 standard.

Melaleuca has once more been re-recognized as an extremely effective cure for a variety of medical conditions. Who would have ever thought that a tree would have such a long and complex history?

So, the answer is yes, health, wellness & a tea tree do connect. Infact, they have connected so well that some companies have used melaleuca oil in many of their products to establish a successful health line.

Many have been blessed to learn and gain from the multiple benefits of the tea tree and for me, it was a discovery beyond all medical discoveries.

Essential oils are aromatic oils extracted from plants and have many therapeutic benefits. Essential oils are used to soothe the skin, heal cuts, eliminate pimples, help you relax, relieve digestive problems and even cure colds and flus.

For therapeutic purposes, only the most pure oils will do. Unfortunately there are many companies out there selling low quality oils and you should only buy from a source that you trust. Like with anything else, you get what you get what you pay for so if an oil seems to be priced quite cheaply, it’s probably not a good quality oil for medicinal purposes.

When using essential oils, it’s important to remember that these oils are strong and should not be applied directly to the skin. Mix them with base oils like almond or wheatgerm oil to reduce their potency.

Essential Oils And Their Uses

Lavender

Perhaps the most popular of the essential oils, lavender has many uses. It is a great topical treatment which can help heal cuts, bruises and burns and is also a wonder aid to help you relax and can be a natural sleep inducer.

Peppermint

Peppermint oil is great for treating digestive complaints and may be used in preparations for freshening breath.

Tea Tree and Eucalyptus

These oils have long been used to treat a variety of respiratory ailments. These oils can be massaged into the chest or used in an oil burner and help relive congestion making them excellent oils to use for colds. Tea tree oil is also a natural antiseptic and can be dabbed on cuts, bites and stings. It can be used to treat spots and pimples and can be used to gargle but should never be swallowed.

Geranium

Geranium oil has been used for years as a pain reliever.

Rosemary and Thyme

Not only do these herbs taste good but they have wonderful antiseptic properties and can be good for healing problems with the skin.

Citronella

Citronella oil is a natural insect repellent so it’s no wonder they use it in the manufacture of oils and sprays as well as candles to repel insects. To protect your pet against fleas, try soaking his collar in citronella oil. To help keep down insects in summer, buy some citronella Geraniums and put the around your porch or deck.

Garlic

Garlic is another natural insect repellent and is vital in helping to keep your immune system healthy. It can be a great way to help prevent colds and viruses naturally. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. And it tastes good too!

Patchouli

This fragrant oil smells great when used in an oil burner but it is also a great topical treatment for eczema and dandruff.

Ylang-ylang

This is another fragrant oil that can be burned for it’s aroma, and is also reputed to relieve stress, palpitations and high blood pressure.

Orange Oil

Use this oil as an aroma therapy, it is reputed to help with depression and nervous tension.

Cinnamon

This tasty herb is becoming popular for many treatments but it’s great when used as an aroma therapy. Mix it with orange oil and you’ll have a wonderful homey smell in your house. As a topical oil, it is excellent for warts and viral infections.

If you are really ambitious, you can grow these herbs yourself and collect the oil by stewing large amounts in pure water. Collect the steam and let it cool. The essential oils will rise to the top of the drained water and can be collected with an eyedropper. Or if you want a less labor intensive method, you can buy a product called a “flower still” which will help make the job easier.

Aromatherapy is a traditionally used concept used for beauty, calming senses, meditation, health care and healing. It involves use of herbs, infused oil, floral waters, carrier oils and other natural substances. The aromatherapy oils are derived from leaves, flowers, barks, berries and leaves. Organic aromatherapy means the essential oils used for aromatherapy are grown organically. These oils are often sold full strength but may also be sold diluted. Diluted oils mean that only a percentage of the oil is of the desired extract and the remainder is carrier oil such as almond or avocado. Organic plants are grown without the treatment of pesticides.

Many organic farmers believe that pesticides not only harm the earth, but they are not healthy to ingest either. Organic farms are checked every few years to test for chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other types of artificial substances. Organic aromatherapy oil is the best choice if you want your mind and body to be treated using the purest forms of nature. Organic aromatherapy oil comes from essential oils that originate from plants that have not been treated by any chemicals. Organic aromatherapy offers a unique purity which will smell and work better for many people than the non organic varieties.

One of the principles of aromatherapy is using natural methods rather than synthetic. Using lavender for organic aromatherapy is a good place to start; lavender is a light delicate scent that has many therapeutic purposes. A few drops of the organic essential oil can be placed in an ounce of almond oil to produce relaxing massage oil. The organic aromatherapy essential oil can also be placed on a cotton cloth to scent the bedding after washing. Simply place 3-4 drops of the pure essential oil onto a plain cotton cloth, after the load of laundry is dried add the scented cloth and tumble with the heat off for an additional 10-15 minutes.

Aromatherapy is a form of science that has been around for centuries. Like its name suggests, aromatherapy is a form of treatment that uses scents. In aromatherapy, essential oils are used to relax and energize a person. It is very effective in alleviating psychological problems you have, has very good cosmetic uses and is basically very helpful in reducing stress in a person.

These oils are availed from the living parts of plants and trees. This is why it is possible to be used safely and beneficially at home. In fact, you will in fact enjoy yourself more if you use oils for aromatherapy in your own home. However there are some points that you have to keep in mind when practicing aromatherapy on your own, in your house.

It is very important that you dilute essential oils before using them. They should not be applied directly on your body without any dilution. The only oils that can be used without any dilution are lavender and tea tree oil. You have to be very careful when using essential oils, especially around flames and heat sources. This is because these volatiel oils are flammable. So if you use burners to diffuse the oil, it is better to use the burner after putting water in the burner. This way, the essential oil enters the air when the water evaporates.

Usually, essential oils are used only externally. However, sometimes, an aroma therapist may advise oils to be taken by mouth. The reasons essential oils should not be taken internally is that some oils are toxic when swallowed. Sometimes essential oils are diluted and used as some form of oral treatment like mouthwash. In such cases, it should not be swallowed.

Make sure that you place the oils in a safe place, beyond the reach of children. It’s important that you consult the aroma therapist, if you intend to use these essential oils when pregnant, on your babies and young children. If you intend to use these oils not only as a form of aromatherapy, but also as part of homeopathic or herbal medicine treatment, then you should seek advice from both homeopathic and herbal medicine doctors and the aroma therapist.

Aromatherapy does not cure all medical conditions; that’s why the doctor should be consulted before using aromatherapy as a treatment for a medical condition. Once all these points are kept in mind, and followed, you will find your aromatherapy treatment to be both beneficial and enjoyable.

The world is fast waking up to the wonders of tea tree oil. The famous beauty brand “The Body Shop” has an entire line of products made from tea tree oil. These products are very helpful in preventing blemishes. They deeply purify and cleanse your skin along with absorbing excess oil. Body Shop and many other companies have created lines of tea tree oil products to help treat acne.

Tea tree leaves were earlier used as a substitute for tea, which is how the tea tree got its name. The Tea Tree oil is obtained from steam distillation of the leaves of the tree Melaleuca alternifolia. Among the 100 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol accounts for most of the antimicrobial properties. This tree is native to the New South Wales located in Australia.

Tea Tree oil was used in Australia as a potent antiseptic much before any scientific research. However the recent studies support use of tea tree oil in skin care and various aliments including acne, dandruff, toenail infection, fungal infection, and Athlete’s foot. It is also used in toothpaste, mouthwashes, soaps and shampoos all over the world. It is also used to cure flu, cough and to clear congestion.

Tea Tree Oil Used for Acne

Tea tree oil contains terepinen-4-ol which is mostly responsible for its antimicrobial properties. This helps in killing the harmful bacteria. Using tea tree oil to treat acne lesion helps to kill Propionibacterium acnes, the skin-dwelling bacteria that is responsible for causing acne.

Tea tree oil is very effective in treatment of moderate acne. A random trial was done to prove this by the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Department of Dermatology on 124 people. This trail compared the effectiveness and tolerance of 5% tea tree oil and 5% benzoyl peroxide. The results showed that there was significant reduction using tea tree oil, albeit with slower onset of action.

Even though tea tree oil took more time in showing results, there were fewer side effects like burning, itching, dryness and stinging that benezoyl peroxide group showed.

Another study in 2007 on 60 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris also gave notably better results than placebo.

Using Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Undiluted tea tree oil should not be applied to an acne lesion as it can cause burning, itching, dryness, redness, skin irritation and even blistering. The concentration that is advised is 5% tea tree oil solution which can be applied to effected areas.

To make 5% tea tree oil solution mix 5 parts of tea tree oil to 95 parts of water (5cc of 100% tea tree oil to 95cc of water).

Brenda Harper, a Californian aesthetician, uses it on a regular basis with clients who experience acne with “wonderful results,”. She recommends application of Glycolic acid after dabbing tea tree oil on the affected areas and waiting for 15 minutes.

Tea tree oil is safe, as long as not used internally. Data on oral use of tea tree oil is very limited and there are some reports of side effects of oral ingestion.

Dry skin is generally due to less oil and moisture produced by sebaceous glands. Simple dry skin results from lack of natural oils affecting mostly women under age of 35 years, while complex dry skin lacks both oil and moisture and is distinguished by fine lines, enlarged pores and sagging skin that happens with aging. Alternatively, dry skin could be results from genetic condition, poor diet especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins, exposure to environmental factors such sun, wind, or aggressive usage of chemicals, cosmetics and excessive bathing with harsh soaps.

To name a few essential oils for dry skin are Chamomile, Geranium, Hyssop, Lavender, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang-Ylang.

-	Aloe Vera gel applied topically helps to remove dead skin cells and is soothing, healing and moisturizing.

-	Calendula & comfrey with its skin softening properties are used in facial sauna.

-	4 – 5 drops of lavender oil to bath water followed by application of diluted evening primrose oil or Aloe Vera cream moistens the dry skin.

-	Evening primrose oil contains essential fatty acid to strengthen skin cells and boost their moisture content.

-	Drink tea brewed with chamomile, dandelion or peppermint. Teas of Borage, fennel, coltsfoot or calendula help improve the skin. Add 1 tsp of either herb to 1 cup of boiling water and drink daily.

-	Tea tree oil with its skin penetrating properties helps to moisturize and smooth the skin.

Treat yourself with these recipes using herbs and essential oils –

Dry skin mask – Obtain a smooth paste by mixing 6 ounce of unflavored yoghurt, few finely crushed almonds, 2 tsp honey and wheat germ oil each. Apply and massage of your skin for 20 minutes. Wash off with cold water. Crushed almonds exfoliate and eliminate dead skin, honey aids in adhering mask to skin and vitamin E in wheat germ oil fights radicals.

Home made balm for dry, chapped lips – Heat ½ cup almond or grape seed oil. Add 2 tsp of melted beeswax, ½ tsp alkanet root. Strain the oil removing the root. Add 8-10 drops of natural flavoring oil and 3 drops of vitamin E oil.

If you hands are moisture dry or chapped, massage them with sandalwood, rose or chamomile essential oils mixed with hydrating base oil like hazelnut, avocado or evening primrose.

For energizing natural hand moisturizer, mix wheat germ oil with your favorite essential oil.

Before bath, apply a mixture of 1 egg yolk, 1 tsp orange juice, 1 tsp olive oil, few drops of rose water and lime juice on your skin. This is a good morning skin cleanser. 1 egg, 1 tsp honey, ½ tsp olive oil and few drops of rose water makes a good beauty mask for dry skin.

Try Herbal facial sauna once a week. Use chamomile, lavender, and peppermint herbs. Simmer 2 – 4 tsp of dried or fresh herbs in 2 quarts of water. After few minutes of steaming, place the pot at comfortable distance from your face on a table. Bend over the pot with towel covering your face and the pot to trap the steam. After 15 minutes, splash cold water and air dry your skin followed by application of moisturizer or facial oil. You can cool the herbal water and use it as toning lotion to be dabbed on your face after cleansing.

The benefits of tea tree oil for your skin

Tea tree oil is an essential oil which is yellow- or green-tinged with a fresh amphoraceous smell. It is produced by steam distillation of the leaves of the plant – Melaleuca alternifolia, more commonly known as the Australian tea tree. As the name suggests, the trees are native to Australia and have been used for thousands of years by the aboriginals in Australia for healing wounds, cuts, abrasions, burns and infections by applying the crushed leaves to the affected areas.

These days the tea tree oil is being used as an antiseptic to treat burns, cuts, insect bites etc. It has anti-inflammatory properties and hence can be used as a topical application to give relief in conditions like arthritis, eczema, bursitis and gout.It can also give relief from pain because of its analgesic property. The oil is also anti-fungal. In some hospitals in Australia, it has been used before surgery to boost the affected immune system and in a London hospital, a study has been done and it was shown that the Tea Tree Oil can be an alternative to Vancomysin in countering the super bug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Tea tree oil when inhaled makes breathing easier by acting as a decongestant. It can alleviate symptoms of sore throat and decrease the symptoms of cold and flu.

SKIN
The Tea tree oil has many uses for the skin. Its proven antifungal properties can be used to treat candidacies, ringworm, athlete’s foot and thrush. It can also be used to treat dandruff because it fights Malassezia furfur, which is most common cause for this affliction. Fungal nail infections can be cured by application of a formulation containing tea tree oil twice daily and relief can be typically seen in 3-4 months.

As a strong anti-viral agent, Tea Tree is effective in fighting many common infectious diseases such as cold, shingles, measles, flu and chicken pox.

Tea tree oil is effective in treating boils, insect bites, minor wounds, soothe inflammation caused by sunburn poison ivy and bee stings.

The essential oil is also known to prevent foul body odor and soothe burning feet. It reduces scarring caused by hypertrophy. When massaged, tea tree oil may alleviate the discomfort of joint injuries and sore muscles.
It can also be used in the treatment of acne. When topically applied, a 5% solution of tea tree oil has been proved as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide though it had a slower onset of action.

The oil can be used effectively for treating nappy/Diaper rash in babies which is cause.

Research has also shown that tea tree oil may have topical anti-viral property, with the Herpes virus, chicken pox, cold sores, warts, and shingles blisters, etc.

A word of caution; though tea tree oil is safe to use, it should not be used undiluted as in case of all essential oils. Undiluted Tea Tree Oil can cause irritation, itchiness, and redness on sensitive skin. Therefore, in case of people with sensitive skin, it is prudent to dilute the tea tree oil in another base oil like olive oil or even sunflower oil.
